The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) developed from two educational branches that later merged into one institution. The first began in 1859 with the creation of the Medical College of Alabama in Mobile. The second started in 1936, when the University of Alabama opened an extension center in Birmingham. Located at 2131 6th Avenue North, the center began with 116 students taking evening courses in business, engineering, and education.
A major transformation took place in 1945 when the Medical College of Alabama moved to Birmingham and established a university medical center. The relocation expanded medical education and research in the city. In 1954, the extension center moved near the medical facilities, bringing both parts of Birmingham’s university system closer together. In 1966, they were united under the name University of Alabama in Birmingham, and in 1969 UAB became an independent institution within the University of Alabama system.
Over the following decades, UAB developed into a major research university, especially in biomedical science and healthcare. Its academic medical center became one of the largest in the United States, receiving substantial funding from the National Institutes of Health and competing with research institutions such as Johns Hopkins University and Duke University.
UAB also developed a notable sports program. The university’s football team, part of the UAB Blazers, was discontinued in 2014 after financial concerns were raised. Following strong support from students, alumni, and the Birmingham community, more than $27 million was raised to restore the program. The team returned to competition in 2017, playing its comeback game before a record crowd of 45,212 fans.

The Seal
