The UEM logo conveys dynamism and a sense of university community, bringing people together around education and growth. Its simple design evokes a sense of unity and engagement, becoming an important element in the lives of students, faculty, and partners.
The Institute of Engineering and Management, or IEM, was founded in 1989 by Professor Satyajit Chakrabarti in Kolkata, West Bengal. It became the state’s first private engineering college. It was based in Salt Lake, Sector V, the technology district of West Bengal. Chakrabarti, a mechanical engineering graduate from an Indian Institute of Technology, wanted to connect academic training with industry needs.
IEM received accreditation from the All India Council for Technical Education and was affiliated with West Bengal University of Technology, later renamed Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology. The institute focused on engineering and management programs, building its reputation through graduate placement and market-oriented training while competing with public institutions such as IITs and NITs.
In 2011, at the invitation of the Rajasthan government, IEM expanded by creating the University of Engineering and Management in Jaipur. UEM Jaipur was established through Ordinance No. 11 of 2011 and confirmed by Rajasthan Act No. 5 of 2012. In 2014, West Bengal Act No. 25 authorized the establishment of UEM Kolkata in New Town, which opened in 2015 as the third institution in the IEM-UEM group.
In 2016, the group launched IEEE UEMCON on ubiquitous computing, electronics, and mobile communication, with its seventh edition held at Columbia University in New York from October 20 to 22. From 2017, it organized IEEE CCWC at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and from 2019, IEEE IEMANTENNA at the University of British Columbia. In 2017, NAAC gave IEM an A grade, and NIRF ranked it third in West Bengal after IIT Kharagpur and NIT Durgapur, and 79th nationally.
