The United Methodist Church traces its origins to England in the 1730s, when John and Charles Wesley created a religious group at Oxford University. On April 23, 1968, the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged in Dallas, Texas, creating the United Methodist Church. The merger removed the Central Jurisdiction system and organized congregations by geography rather than race. The new denomination became one of the largest Protestant groups in the United States.
In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the church faced debates over same-sex marriage and LGBTQ clergy. In 2022, traditionalist members formed the Global Methodist Church, and by 2023 more than 6,000 U.S. congregations had left the denomination. In 2024, the General Conference removed several restrictions related to LGBTQ issues.
