Ravensburger and Disney announced Disney Lorcana at D23 Expo in 2022. Ravensburger had already worked with Disney on Disney Villainous, yet Lorcana became its first full trading card game. The First Chapter reached local game stores on August 18, 2023, followed by a wider retail launch in September. Demand exceeded available stock, forcing Ravensburger to organize additional print runs.
Rise of the Floodborn and Into the Inklands followed during the next release cycle, expanding the card pool and establishing a quarterly schedule similar to Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon Trading Card Game. Ursula’s Return became the fourth set and completed the storyline developed across the first three releases. Ravensburger presented it during the first Disney Lorcana Lorecast broadcast.
The set arrived in local game stores and selected Disney parks on May 17, 2024, before entering wider retail on May 31. Its story centered on Ursula from The Little Mermaid. The collection contained 204 main cards, reaching 222 with Enchanted variants. Encanto characters Mirabel, Bruno, Julieta, and Dolores appeared for the first time, accompanied by the new Madrigal classification.
Alongside the card set, Ravensburger released Illumineer’s Quest: Deep Trouble. In this cooperative game, players faced an automated Ursula deck across four difficulty levels. The Disney Lorcana Challenge tournament series began on May 25, 2024, with events in Atlanta and Lille. By the time of the release, Lorcana was available in more than 20 countries.
