What is Wagner Group?
Wagner Group, known as PMC Wagner, is a Russian paramilitary organization funded by the state. This private military company (PMC) is made up of mercenaries and is actually considered to be the private army of Yevgeny Prigozhin, a former close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Interestingly, despite the existence of a law prohibiting the existence of private military companies in Russia, this group operates outside the law in their country. Throughout its existence, the Russian government has used this organization as a proxy. Using the infrastructure of the Russian Armed Forces, the group received secret government funding until 2023. In 2023, the US authorities recognized PMC Wagner as a transnational criminal organization.
