XFL: Brand overview
The XFL was founded in 2000 by Vince McMahon, head of the World Wrestling Federation, in collaboration with NBC. The idea was to create an alternative to the National Football League (NFL). The XFL positioned itself as a show that incorporated elements of wrestling, featuring players with microphones, flashy presentations, and minimal rules. Despite initial viewer interest, the league’s popularity quickly declined, and after its first season in 2001, the XFL shut down, leaving significant financial losses.
In 2018, McMahon revived the league, focusing on the quality of football without incorporating wrestling elements. In 2020, the season was halted due to the pandemic, and the league faced bankruptcy again. Later, actor Dwayne Johnson and partners purchased the brand, and the XFL returned in 2023.
In late 2023, the XFL merged with the USFL, forming a new league named the United Football League (UFL). Now, the XFL continues as a separate conference within the UFL, with broadcasting rights held by ESPN and Fox Sports.

The appearance of the XFL symbol was connected to the aesthetics of American sports at the end of the 20th century. The main idea was expressed through the contrast of massive forms and aggressive colors.
The background element was a large black “X” symbol. It created a sense of challenge and confrontation, reflecting the league’s character as an alternative to traditional American football norms.
Above the symbol was the abbreviation “XFL” in rich red. The serif typeface with dense outlines resembled the style of American college sports teams, such as those found in College Block or Collegiate Heavy Outline. 2018 – 2022
The XFL redesign overhauled its visual identity and updated its organizational structure. The main part of the logo retained the combination of the letters “XFL” and the large “X,” but all elements were reworked. The symbol appeared more modern and dynamic.
The background symbol was now a large “X” in deep dark blue. Along its edges ran red-and-white contour lines. The lines of the letter grew thicker, giving the background a denser, more powerful appearance.
The letters “XFL” were rendered in bright red with a white outline, which enhanced the contrast of the shapes. The typography used an italic sans-serif font similar to Agency FB Bold Italic.

2022 – 2023
A complete redesign of the visual system and the league’s logo accompanied the relaunch. The new symbol abandoned the previous saturated style and moved toward concise geometry. Bright shades and complex lines were replaced by a minimalist structure, with black and precise letterforms taking center stage.
The logo was based on a geometric sans-serif typeface whose form was closer to futuristic and space aesthetics than to football symbolism. The letters were created with even proportions, giving a sense of stability and technological focus.
The redesign coincided with the visual update of all teams before the 2023 season. The work was carried out by R/GA, a company known for its expertise in sports branding.
