The Indian Premier League (IPL) logo embodies the dynamism and spectacle of India’s premier cricket tournament. Its graphic design highlights the event’s brightness, modern approach, and international significance.

Indian Premier League: Brand overview

The Indian Premier League (IPL) traces back to the late 1990s when its founder, Lalit Modi, envisioned a cricket league inspired by American sports. Officially launched by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008, IPL became the first major professional Twenty20 cricket league, immediately attracting millions of viewers and major sponsorships.

IPL has faced significant challenges. Security issues led to the team’s relocation to South Africa in 2009, and match-fixing scandals in 2013 resulted in the suspension of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two seasons. Despite these issues, IPL continued to grow, expanding from eight to ten teams in 2022 with the addition of the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.

Today, IPL is the most popular and profitable cricket league globally, with a brand value exceeding $12 billion. The tournament attracts millions of fans annually and serves as a model for similar leagues worldwide.

What is Indian Premier League?

It is a popular Indian cricket league featuring shortened matches that last approximately three hours. Ten teams from major Indian cities compete, owned by famous actors, businessmen, and large corporations. Players are bought at auctions for millions of dollars. Matches feature musical performances, dancers, and pyrotechnic displays.

2008

Indian Premier League Logo 2008

The first Indian Premier League logo was used for only a few months after the league’s launch. Its original format combined two main visual elements: a stylized silhouette of a cricket player with a bat and a typographic arrangement of the league’s name.

The athlete is depicted at the peak of the swing, with the silhouette rendered in solid dark blue and minimal detailing to emphasize the shot’s dynamics and power. This element conveys the energy and speed that are key features of the Twenty20 format. The player is encircled by a light blue curved orbit representing the ball’s flight path after the strike. The composition metaphorically recalls the motion of a sickle or a wave, visually enhancing the sense of speed and sharpness of the moment.

The typography utilizes the Univers Condensed typeface, characterized by its strict geometry, compactness, and moderate letter width. The text is arranged in two levels: the upper features the words “Indian Premier” in small capitals with narrow strokes; the lower contains the enlarged word “League” in the same font but with thicker glyphs, creating emphasis on the final part of the name.

The color palette is limited to two shades of blue. The primary blue, used for the player and lettering, symbolizes authority, professionalism, and reliability. The light blue of the orbit adds contrast and visually reinforces a sense of speed and lightness, enhancing the brand’s emotional perception.

This version of the IPL logo was short-lived and soon changed. However, the original composition and color palette laid the foundation for the visual style maintained in later adaptations.

The updated Indian Premier League logo was introduced a few months after the first and became a lighter, brighter version. The changes affected both the visual composition and typography, enhancing the expressiveness of the league’s identity and reinforcing its association with Twenty20’s dynamics.

In the new version, the batsman’s silhouette became lighter and more elegant. The shape remained recognizable, but the proportions were slightly refined. The player is shown completing the stroke, body extended in a tense motion, with the bat’s line flowing into a multicolored orbit. The orbit, shaped as a smooth curve, is now filled with a gradient from green to yellow to pink, symbolizing a range of emotions, a festive atmosphere, and the competition’s vibrancy. Visually, it resembles a burst or an arc of fireworks, conveying the match’s emotional climax.

The typography was redesigned and is based on Optima Bold (a modified version of Optima Incise or Alinea Incise Bold by Thierry Puyfoulot of Présence Typo). The new typeface features extended, slightly pointed glyph ends, enhancing a sense of stability and elegance. The words “Indian Premier League” are placed to the right of the player figure, set in large, all-caps type over three lines. The evenly sized glyphs and expressive spacing make the composition easy to read and visually balanced.

The palette in the new design was expanded with bright, warm shades, while the player figure and typography retained their deep, saturated blue. Blue still conveys the tournament’s seriousness and high standards, while the vivid colors of the orbit convey the matches’ celebratory nature and emotional intensity.

In special cases, when the logo is integrated with sponsor branding, the full tournament name is replaced by the abbreviation “IPL” in large, thick blue letters to emphasize the brand and the competition’s status.

Since its introduction in 2009, this logo has served as the tournament’s primary identifier, reflecting its atmosphere, character, and the specifics of the Twenty20 format.

2009 – 2012

The DLF Indian Premier League logo, used from 2009 to 2012, was the first sponsored variation of the league’s official symbol, created under an agreement with India’s largest real estate developer, DLF. The contract was signed in 2008 and provided tournament funding of approximately ₹200 crore (approximately $24 million) over five years.

The main visual composition featured a batsman rendered in deep blue, symbolizing the tournament’s authority and athletic credibility. The player’s silhouette is shown after a powerful stroke, symbolizing the energy and dynamism of the Twenty20 format. The motion of the hit is emphasized by a stylized, two-shade light-blue arc, visually reminiscent of a sickle or the trail of a ball in flight, thereby enhancing the perception of game speed.

The typography of the “Indian Premier League” text is a modified typeface similar to Optima Nova Black or Avenir Next Bold. The glyphs feature thickened strokes and pointed line endings, conveying a sense of prestige and elegance. The text is divided into two levels: the upper “Indian Premier” in thinner lines and the lower, enlarged “League,” highlighting the event’s importance.

Above the main text is the sponsor’s emblem, DLF. The DLF logo is executed in a strict geometric style, consisting of the abbreviation in bold sans-serif type in dark gray and a large triangular symbol formed from nine small equilateral triangles. The triangular element symbolizes the developer brand’s reliability and confidence, and reflects the league’s financial strength and commercial potential.

The combined layout of the IPL and DLF marks visually reflected the start of a new commercial era, transforming the sports tournament into a global entertainment project. The visual integration of the title sponsor’s logo directly with the league symbol demonstrated the IPL’s financial stability. It underscored its new role in the sports and entertainment industry.

The IPL and BCCI leadership jointly coordinated and oversaw the visual identity, with Lalit Modi directly responsible for promoting the tournament on the international stage. This version of the logo remained in use until the end of the contract with DLF in 2012, after which the league continued with the base version without sponsor branding.

2013

IPL sponsorship Logo 2013

The Indian Premier League logo, featuring a new sponsor, was introduced at the start of the tournament’s sixth season. The title sponsor became the international company PepsiCo. The visual composition of the league’s logo retained its previous elements, including the recognizable batsman silhouette in rich blue. The player, captured in the dynamic completion of a stroke, is complemented by a curved, light-blue arc that conveys the ball’s flight and the energy of the Twenty20 format.

The main change involved integrating PepsiCo branding, reflecting the terms of a five-year contract signed in November 2012 for about ₹396.8 crore (about $71.8 million). Above the “IPL” abbreviation, set in large letters using a modified Optima Nova Black typeface, was placed the Pepsi emblem created by Arnell Group. The Pepsi logo used in the design was an earlier version, from 2003 to 2008, which had previously been used in the neighboring Pakistani market. The Pepsi mark is a circular disc divided by a wavy white band into red and blue sections, symbolizing the brand’s global reach and commitment to freshness.

The IPL lettering is presented in thick, slightly curved sans-serif glyphs, emphasizing the tournament’s solidity and status. The “IPL” letters are positioned to the right of the batsman and the Pepsi emblem, balancing the composition.

The logo’s color palette combines two main tones: the blue of the player figure and the “IPL” text, as well as the bright blue-and-red contrast of the Pepsi emblem. This color pairing visually connects with the energy, excitement, and modern character of the sporting event, aligning with Pepsi’s global brand image.

2014 – 2015

The next version continued the league’s partnership with PepsiCo, coinciding with Pepsi’s global visual rebranding. Following Pepsi’s large-scale redesign in 2014, the sponsor’s emblem on the IPL logo was also updated, resulting in a slight but noticeable adjustment to the overall composition.

The change involved updating the Pepsi mark, now placed above the shortened “IPL” lettering. The new sponsor logo featured a slightly tilted globe divided by the signature white wave into two sections: red and blue. The main difference from the previous version was a more prominent white segment that emphasized freshness and openness. The typography of the sponsor’s name also changed: the bold uppercase was replaced with lowercase letters in a light sans-serif font, giving the composition a friendlier, more informal appearance.

The “IPL” abbreviation, located below the Pepsi emblem, continued to use the Optima Nova Black typeface, characterized by heavy, smoothly curved strokes and proportionally enlarged glyphs. The font conveyed the competition’s prestige and authority, reinforcing the IPL’s reputation as a premium sporting event.

The logo’s color palette was built on the contrast between the blue used for the “IPL” text and the player figure, and Pepsi’s signature red and light blue. Pepsi’s colors symbolize energy, vitality, and a modern brand character, which is reflected in the league’s image.

This visual update was supported by an active marketing push from Pepsi, including limited-edition designer cans in fall 2014 and a large-scale ad campaign with the slogan “Come on, bulaava aaya hai.” The commercials were developed by JWT India in collaboration with Paintbox and Mithkar Studios, along with a CGI team, to ensure high impact and memorability for the “Pepsi IPL” season.

Despite its strong positioning and vibrant promotion, Pepsi ended its title sponsorship early in October 2015, citing reputational risks following a series of scandals involving two league teams.

2016 – 2019

IPL sponsorship Logo 2016

The new Indian Premier League sponsor logo for the 2016-2019 seasons came with the arrival of Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo, which signed a contract with the league in October 2015. This version was officially introduced in April 2016, marking the ninth season of the tournament and remaining in use for three consecutive seasons.

The overall visual composition of the logo maintained continuity: on the left, the batsman figure in deep blue was shown in a dynamic pose, completing a stroke with the bat. The blue player figure, surrounded by a smooth, sky-blue arc, conveyed the ball’s speed and power as it was sent into the field. This arc resembled the flight of the ball or a stream of air, adding an emotional sense of motion and energy associated with the Twenty20 format.

The main change was the placement of the new Vivo sponsor mark. The company name appeared as a clean, white, lowercase inscription with gently rounded glyphs, set against a bright blue, rectangular background. The Vivo logo design features thin lines and rounded stroke ends, emphasizing the brand’s lightness and technological nature. The blue background color symbolized purity, freshness, and innovation, aligning with the nature of the company’s mobile technology.

Below the Vivo banner was the “IPL” abbreviation in large type, similar to previous versions of Optima Nova Black, with its distinctive smooth glyph lines conveying the tournament’s prestige and prominence. The text was in deep blue, providing visual harmony and balance among the elements.

The combination of blue and light blue in the design symbolized confidence, stability, and innovation. The palette gave the logo a fresher look, making it visually lighter and more modern than previous versions.

2017

The anniversary Indian Premier League logo, featuring a sponsor, was created specifically for the tournament’s tenth season and appeared in February of that year, following the IPL Auction in Bangalore, just before the season started on April 5. It showcased the connection among the league’s visual identity, history, and symbolism, highlighting the anniversary’s significance with distinctive gold accents.

The main innovation was replacing the traditional blue batsman silhouette with a white version placed within the negative space of the zero in the large number “10.” The proportions of the digit and the silhouette were chosen to ensure that the player’s figure appeared complete and clear. The batsman is shown in the familiar pose of completing a stroke, maintaining continuity with earlier versions. The gold color of the number “10” emphasizes the league’s ten-year milestone’s premium status and significance. The digit’s outline is framed by a double white-and-blue border, creating volume and contrast that enhance the symbol’s impact and reinforce the celebratory nature of the occasion.

To the right of the gold composition is the title sponsor’s logo, Vivo. It features the brand’s name in lowercase white letters with smooth, rounded glyphs, placed on a light blue rectangular banner. Visually, Vivo harmonizes with the gold and blue tones of the adjacent elements, balancing the logo as a whole and combining the brand’s innovative corporate image with the league’s prestige. Beneath the sponsor mark is the traditional “IPL” abbreviation.

2019 – 2021

IPL sponsorship Logo 2019

The main difference in the new sponsor emblem was the introduction of a gradient color palette for the arc representing the ball’s motion, integrated into the batsman figure. This arc now transitions from a greenish-blue shade to a rich orange-pink, adding dynamism and emotional expression to the composition.

The introduction of the vibrant gradient in 2019 aimed to highlight the tournament’s modernity, energy, and spectacle. The arc’s appearance recalls a burst of fireworks or a comet’s trail, amplifying the brand’s emotional impact and underscoring the festive atmosphere of Twenty20 matches.

The visual interaction of the figure and the rainbow arc creates a sense of motion and lightness while retaining recognizability and continuity with earlier versions.

To the right of the composition is the banner of title sponsor Vivo, displayed as a light blue rectangle with rounded corners and white sans-serif lettering in a light weight, consistent with the company’s signature style. The thin lines and smooth contours of the glyphs convey Vivo’s technological and innovative character, blending seamlessly with the logo’s overall style.

The “IPL” abbreviation, placed directly below the sponsor mark, has been preserved in its original form.

2020

IPL sponsorship Logo 2020

The 2020 logo was unveiled on official platforms on August 20 of that year, following a contract signing with the new title partner, Dream11, for ₹222 crore. This update reflected the change in key sponsor and introduced noticeable design adjustments, while maintaining overall stylistic continuity.

The main part of the design retained the familiar composition, centered on the deep-blue batsman figure shown in the act of completing a characteristic batting motion. The new element was the placement of the Dream11 logo to the right, above the traditional “IPL” abbreviation. It was presented as a horizontal red banner with a contrasting white inscription. The letters “Dream11” were set in a strict geometric sans-serif typeface with straight lines and heavy glyphs, emphasizing the sponsor’s status and confidence. The red and white banner symbolized activity, passion, and the competitive spirit characteristic of the Dream11 fantasy platform. The “IPL” abbreviation was placed directly beneath the banner.

The use of the new Dream11 mark within the IPL logo reflected the league’s commercial approach, highlighting its appeal to innovative digital brands.

2022 – today

IPL sponsorship Logo 2022

In March 2022, a new version of the emblem was introduced following the partnership agreement with the Tata Group, replacing the previous version associated with Vivo. The BCCI Board officially approved this Directors’ event in January 2022. The new design was unveiled during IPL 15, which commenced on March 26, 2022, marking a new chapter in the league’s sponsorship history.

Visually, the logo maintained continuity with previous versions: the core element was a deep-blue silhouette of a batsman captured at the decisive stage of a stroke, complemented by a curved arc.

The change was the title sponsor’s symbol. Instead of Dream11’s red banner, a light blue Tata Group mark appeared. The word “TATA” was set in bold uppercase letters with distinctive geometric sans serif glyphs, conveying stability, prestige, and the confidence of the industrial giant. Above the text was Tata Group’s signature emblem, a stylized letter “T” within an oval frame, an allegorical image of reliability, trust, and the company’s century-old heritage.

Tata Group’s appearance as a sponsor marked a historic moment, as it was the first time the IPL had a title partner that was an Indian conglomerate with over a hundred years of history and a global presence in more than 100 countries. The initial agreement covered two seasons (2022-2023) with an annual value of around ₹300 crore. The success of the partnership led to a 2024-2028 extension, with the deal reaching a record ₹2500 crore.

Font and Colors

Indian Premier League Symbol

The typographic foundation of the Indian Premier League logo features a modern, expressive uppercase sans-serif typeface with carefully balanced proportions. The glyphs feature refined, slightly widened strokes that taper smoothly at the ends, giving the letters both elegance and dynamism. The style most closely resembles Optima Nova Black and Alinea Incise Bold, but with slightly modified contours tailored specifically for the brand’s needs.

The main color of the logo is a calm yet saturated shade of blue, visually associated with stability, prestige, and authority. All typography and the batsman figure are rendered in this shade, reinforcing visual unity and forming a cohesive emblem.

An additional element that draws attention and enhances the design’s impact is the arc composition, with a bright gradient that smoothly shifts from green and yellow to pink and orange. This multicolored palette gives the logo visual depth and energy, highlighting the tournament’s competitive spirit and festive atmosphere while reflecting its modern, entertainment-oriented character. The combination of the base blue and vibrant gradient effectively reinforces the brand’s sporting image and prestige.
