Binance: Brand overview

Binance was founded in July 2017 by Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, together with He Yi, his former OKCoin colleague and later co-founder and marketing chief. CZ had worked on futures trading software at Bloomberg from 2001 to 2005, founded Fusion Systems in Shanghai, joined Blockchain.info, served briefly as CTO of OKCoin, and later created Bijie Tech.

The company was founded in China and raised $15 million through an ICO for the BNB token. Trading opened eleven days after the sale. Within six months, Binance became the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by daily trading volume, overtaking rivals such as Coinbase. In early 2018, user growth forced the platform to pause new account registrations twice because of server overload.

After China banned crypto trading in late 2017, Binance moved operations to Japan and then looked to Malta, where the government promoted blockchain regulation under the “Blockchain Island” label. The company never settled on a permanent headquarters, an issue that regulators later cited. In 2018, Binance acquired Trust Wallet. In 2019, it launched Binance DEX, Binance Chain, and Binance Launchpad. In 2020, it introduced Binance Smart Chain.

By 2022, Binance handled over half of global crypto trading volume and reported about $12 billion in revenue. Regulatory pressure grew in the United States, where the CFTC and SEC opened investigations. In November 2023, Binance reached a $4.3 billion settlement with the US Department of Justice. CZ admitted violating the Bank Secrecy Act, paid a $50 million fine, and resigned as CEO. Richard Teng replaced him. In April 2024, CZ received a four-month prison sentence, and in October 2025, Donald Trump pardoned him.

In 2017, the platform, one of the most well-known in the virtual currency sphere, introduced its first logo. Its debut coincided with the company’s formative stage. The identity was designed to emphasize the brand’s unique features, which defined the vibrant color scheme of the text and symbolic elements. On a white background, a text block was accompanied by a symbol on the left.

The company name, rendered in orange, takes center stage. The letters are large and uppercase, with their arrangement creating a visual effect of unity. The symbolism reflects the platform’s uniqueness and multifunctionality. The goal was to demonstrate that the platform supports operations with multiple currency units, highlighting its advantage in the market.

The geometric figure on the left, executed in the same color scheme, visually complements the text block. The element, a rhombus composed of individual fragments, is meticulously detailed, adding significance to the logo. The rhombus is a key symbol, making the emblem recognizable and reflecting the company’s concept.
