CleanShot X began in 2018 as CleanShot, a screen-capture app for Apple computers. Polish developer Łukasz Oślizło, previously involved with PixelSnap, was among its creators. The first release appeared on Product Hunt on July 24, 2018, and ranked first for the day. Early tools included desktop icon hiding, background placement, quick previews, and easier file saving.
During 2019, the team expanded screen recording and adapted the software to newer macOS releases. Editing tools for frames, shadows, and captions followed. The app entered a field led by Snagit. It later competed with Shottr, combining screenshots, short recordings, and sharing prep in one product.
CleanShot X was introduced on April 28, 2020, as a major rebuild. It added scrolling capture, pinned images, GIF recording, annotations, and CleanShot Cloud. The launch again ranked first on Product Hunt, while Apple Silicon support arrived in November. In 2021, it added OCR, recording pause, crash recovery, image combining, and automation commands.
