AVG: Brand overview

The AVG brand began in 1991 in Czechoslovakia, when Tomáš Hofer and Jan Gritzbach founded Grisoft in Brno. Their first product, the antivirus Anti-Virus Guard (AVG), was released for DOS in 1992.

In the mid-1990s, the company transitioned to Windows and later released AVG Free, a free version that significantly increased its visibility outside the Czech Republic. Since the early 2000s, AVG has expanded actively through investments and acquisitions. AVG acquired Exploit Prevention Labs and DroidSecurity, gaining technology for web-threat protection and Android device security.

In 2012, AVG went public on the New York Stock Exchange. During this period, the company actively expanded into mobile security, developed macOS products, and introduced the AVG Zen platform.

In 2016, AVG was acquired by Avast Software, a Czech company, for $1.3 billion. In 2022, following Avast’s merger with Norton LifeLock, the two companies formed the conglomerate Avast. Today, AVG remains one of Gen Digital’s brands, offering device protection for millions of users worldwide.

What is AVG?

A Czech company producing software for the digital protection of computers and data. Its range includes free antivirus programs and comprehensive security packages. The brand’s products are popular with novice users because of their easy installation and simple interfaces. Services protect against viruses and phishing and help monitor network activity. Solutions range from basic protection to sophisticated multifunctional offerings.

1991 – 2008

The first AVG logo created the company’s image in the spirit of digital modernism. It resembled a puzzle composed of four segments, each painted a different color: yellow, green, red, and black. The segments had varied textures: the green part featured a pattern, the red-black segment used a gradient, the yellow area was solid with slight texture, and the black portion had small bright dots resembling stars in a night sky.

The logo resembled a modern art fragment, symbolizing the complexity of AVG’s digital protection. Below the graphic were the large black letters “AVG” in a bold sans-serif typeface, and beneath them, in smaller text, “Anti-Virus System.” The serious typography contrasted with the colorful symbol, reflecting the company’s commitment to security.

The palette and execution conveyed a sense of technological innovation, reinforcing AVG’s identity as a modern antivirus software developer.

2008 – 2009

The second AVG logo appeared in 2008 with an updated palette. The black color was replaced by a dark blue, which became the brand’s main color. The four-segment design remained, but gained smoothness through gradients and the removal of textures.

Instead of black, the “AVG” letters were rendered in blue, with a subtle gradient and shadow effect. The font became bolder and more confident, giving the company a solid, cybersecurity-focused image.

2009 – 2010

The third version shifted toward a glossy, smooth finish. The symbol retained its palette but gained a 3D appearance by adding slight shadows beneath its segments. The four colored shapes appeared like sheets of paper neatly stacked.

The “AVG” name became black with a metallic gradient. Letters used a simple sans-serif typeface with a slight gloss, creating a metal-like effect. This stylistic choice aligned with the brand’s growing popularity, positioning it as a leader in digital security.

2010 – today

AVG Logo

The AVG antivirus received a redesign while preserving its recognizability. The logo is still built from the same four-colored sections, although the contours have changed. The shapes became smoother, and the corners were softened, adding neatness and visual fluidity. Soft shadows and gradients appeared, giving the image a sense of depth and dimension.

The colors remained the same, namely golden orange, blue, green, and red orange. The golden tone of the upper-left block adds energy; the blue on the right appears technological; the green at the bottom suggests protection; and the red on the right indicates active resistance to threats. The segments feature smooth gradient transitions, creating a layered, harmonious look. The soft lines and transitions form an image reminiscent of interlocked fingers and convey the idea of protection with care.

The company name AVG is placed to the right of the main symbol. The large letters are set in a strict geometric sans-serif typeface in black. The typeface contrasts with the graphic’s soft shapes, emphasizing the brand’s reliability and stability. A small corner detail on the letter G adds individuality.

The overall image of the new AVG logo conveys the company’s key idea: protecting data with advanced technology. The clear text and colorful symbol work together to form a balanced image.
