Marist Red Foxes: Brand overview
The history of Marist College’s athletic program dates back to 1929 in Poughkeepsie, New York. The first official teams were formed after World War II. A significant milestone was reached in 1961 with the introduction of coeducation, which led to the development of women’s athletics. Teams adopted the name “Red Foxes,” inspired by the wildlife of the Hudson Valley.
In 1977, the McCann Recreation Center sports complex opened. In 1981, the college joined NCAA Division III, and by 1994, it advanced to Division I, becoming part of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
The women’s basketball team made its debut in the NCAA tournament in 1997 and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 2007. In 2011, the modern Tenney Stadium opened, significantly improving training and competition facilities.
