Modern Horizons 3: Brand overview

Modern Horizons began as a direct-to-Modern product line for Magic: The Gathering. Before 2019, most new cards entered Modern only after passing through Standard, limiting how aggressively they could be designed. Wizards of the Coast announced the first set in February 2019. They released it on June 14 with 254 cards built for draft, including original designs and older Legacy or Vintage cards entering Modern for the first time.

The set quickly changed tournament play. Several cards reshaped major decks, while some were later banned. Its commercial success led to Modern Horizons 2 on June 18, 2021. The 303-card release again introduced new material directly into Modern and Eternal formats, adding creatures, spells, and artifacts that influenced competitive play for years.

Wizards presented Modern Horizons 3 at MagicCon Chicago on February 23, 2024. It reached MTG Arena on June 11 and received a worldwide tabletop release on June 14. The set contained 303 cards and was built for Limited formats, including draft, while still targeting experienced players.

Modern Horizons 3 returned allied fetch lands, added double-faced cards, and introduced new Eldrazi designs. Four Commander decks and foil collector editions accompanied the main release. The set appeared at the Amsterdam Pro Tour from June 28 to 30 in MH3 Limited Draft and Modern Constructed. Like earlier entries, it remained illegal in Standard while entering Modern, Legacy, Vintage, and Commander in official play.

Modern Horizons 3 Logo

The Modern Horizons III logo appears festive and slightly magical. The title is arranged in three lines, each styled differently. The top section (“MODERN”) is outlined thinly, appearing almost weightless. The letters are transparent inside, with a neat, pinkish border along the edges, creating a sense of airiness and lightness.

Below this is the word “HORIZONS,” which is more substantial. The bold, serif letters resemble those found in old inscriptions from fantasy books or games. They contain a bright, soft, pearlescent effect – a combination of shimmering and changing blue, white, lilac, and pink hues.

Under the main word is the Roman numeral “III,” executed in the same style as “HORIZONS.” The texture is also pearlescent, with reflections and highlights, making the letters appear three-dimensional and almost glass-like.

Modern Horizons III is the name of a Magic: The Gathering card set. This collectible card game originated in the 1990s and has become an iconic pastime for many generations of players. New card releases typically feature vivid and unusual designs. Specifically, the Modern Horizons series targets the Modern play format, introducing original cards and creating space to experiment with game strategies.

The logo’s colors evoke magic, fantasy, and creativity, reflecting Magic: The Gathering’s unique illustrations and narratives that accompany its cards and characters. The pearlescent style hints at the game’s fantastical world, where reality intertwines with enchantment.
