Morgan State Bears: Brand overview

Morgan State University’s athletic history dates back to its founding in Baltimore as the Centenary Biblical Institute in 1867. Renamed Morgan College in 1890 after a significant donation from Reverend Littleton Morgan, the institution began developing organized sports in the early 1920s.

Morgan’s football program was established in 1922 under legendary coach Edward P. Hurt, whose leadership extended to track and field in the 1930s. Under Hurt, Morgan became a dominant force among historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), winning numerous championships.

The 1950s and 1960s marked the university’s athletic peak, particularly under football coach Earl Banks, who led the team to multiple Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) titles. In 1970, Morgan joined the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and quickly became a strong competitor in football and track.

Women’s athletics experienced significant growth in the 1980s, particularly in basketball. Facility upgrades followed, culminating in the opening of a new track-and-field complex in 2001. In 2008, the football team secured its first MEAC championship in decades.

Further renovations occurred in 2016 at Hughes Memorial Stadium. A new chapter began in 2022, with Damon Wilson appointed as football head coach and plans for a major redevelopment of athletic facilities.

In 2023, Morgan’s track and field team again excelled at the MEAC championships, while football showed renewed potential, highlighting the university’s ongoing athletic growth.

Morgan State Bears Logo 1988

The design of the Morgan State Bears logo from the late 1980s was built on the contrast between strict forms and dynamic typography. The visual structure consists of two levels. In the upper part is the massive word “MORGAN,” and in the lower part is the more fluid “Bears.”

The upper block is rendered in a large geometric typeface with straight lines and sharp angles. White letters outlined in blue and cast in shadow create an impression of strength and monumentality. The letter “O” contains the head of a bear. The animal’s depiction is stylized but conveys a predatory look. Raised brows, an open mouth, and an intense gaze express inner tension.

In the lower part, the word “Bears” is rendered in a calligraphic italic style, featuring smooth, almost handwritten lines. The rounded and voluminous shapes of the letters visually contrast with the rigidity of the upper line. The typeface features decorative flourishes, most noticeable in the letter “B.” These enhance the fluidity and liveliness of the composition.

The geometric precision of the upper block and the softness of the lower one form an image that unites institutional stability with the emotional spirit of Morgan State Bears athletics.

Morgan State Bears Logo

The modern Morgan State Bears emblem combines a figurative symbol with bold typography, reflecting the energy and confidence of the university’s teams. The design centers on a roaring bear poised to attack. The silhouette is rendered in sandy beige and black tones with a yellow outline.

The bear’s image is depicted in a simplified anatomical form. The raised paw, open mouth, and visible fangs create an emotional accent, conveying a fighting spirit. Visually, the figure appears to loom over the inscription, reinforcing the sense of strength and dominance.

The text portion consists of two levels. The upper block contains the word “Morgan State,” set in a bold sans-serif typeface with a slight forward slant, which adds a sense of motion. The orange letters contrast with the black and yellow outlines. The lower block features a dark blue rectangular bar with the white inscription “Bears.” It is rendered in a grotesque font with wide proportions and generous letter spacing.

Phoenix Design Works created this version of the logo as part of the university’s visual identity update. The goal of the project was to strengthen Morgan State Athletics’ image. The new identity combines dynamic composition with a modern structure to convey the power of the Morgan State Bears.
