MV Agusta began in 1945, when it spun off as a motorcycle manufacturing division from the Agusta aviation enterprise near Milan, Italy. Count Giovanni Agusta led the venture’s inception. That same year, MV Agusta debuted its first motorcycle, adapted from a design they acquired from Piero Remor. In its early years, it produced models ranging from modest, lightweight machines to extravagant choices for the affluent.
MV Agusta’s prominence in the motorbike world was undeniable during the 1940s and 1950s. They became a force to be reckoned with in Grand Prix motorcycle races, clinching countless world championship titles. This rise produced iconic riders such as Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood, and John Surtees, who carved their legacies astride MV Agusta machines.
As the 1960s began, MV Agusta ventured into road-friendly motorcycles, showcasing models like the 750 America, Superveloce, and Brutale. These machines were not just about getting from point A to B; they were a testament to performance and became much sought after. However, as with many businesses, the company faced financial challenges in the 1970s. As a result, the Castiglioni family took ownership of the motorcycle venture in 1975. Although the MV moniker took a temporary back seat, Cagiva continued production under the banner for decades.
By 1997, a resurgence was in order as the Castiglioni lineage breathed life back into the MV Agusta name, positioning it as MV Agusta Motor S.p.A. The creation of upscale, limited-edition motorcycles marked this new era. The company continued crafting unparalleled sports bikes at its Varese-based factory. Synonymous with opulence and exclusivity, MV Agusta remained a niche luxury emblem. In a significant 2017 move, Mercedes-AMG acquired MV Agusta, but its production heart and soul remain firmly rooted in Italy.
