Nicholls State Colonels athletics began shortly after the founding of Francis T. Nicholls Junior College in 1948, later becoming Nicholls State University. Named for Francis Nicholls, a former governor of Louisiana, the college formed its first basketball team in 1952. It adopted the “Colonels” as its mascot, a reference to Nicholls’ rank during the American Civil War.
By 1956, Nicholls transitioned to a four-year institution and introduced football in 1964, competing initially at the NAIA level. Stopher Gym, home to the basketball team, opened in 1972. Shortly after, the program advanced to NCAA Division II competition and became a founding member of the Gulf South Conference in 1975.
In 1984, Nicholls elevated its status to NCAA Division I, briefly joining the Gulf Star Conference before settling into the Southland Conference in 1991. Athletic infrastructure improved notably with major renovations of John L. Guidry Stadium in 2005.
Recent achievements included the football team’s first Southland championship in 2018. Following extensive facility upgrades in 2020–2021, Nicholls announced plans to join Conference USA in 2022, positioning itself for greater competition.
In 2023, Nicholls continued preparations for its conference transition, with an emphasis on enhanced athlete training and upgraded sports facilities.

Decorative details were removed, the hilt was simplified with a smooth structure, and the blade was shown as straight, slightly tapering toward the tip, and colored in a calm gray tone.
