Solventum traces its origins to 3M, founded in 1902 in Minnesota as a manufacturer of abrasive materials. After unsuccessful attempts at mineral mining, the company changed direction. It became an innovator in industrial and consumer technologies. The company created the Scotch brand and invented masking tape.
3M entered the medical field in the 1960s following its acquisition of Riker Laboratories. In the 1990s, the company developed the first chlorofluorocarbon-free inhaler and the drug Aldara. In 2006, the pharmaceutical division was sold for $2 billion. After that, 3M continued to develop medical equipment.
In 2019, the company acquired Acelity for $ 6.7 billion. In 2020, part of the drug delivery business was sold to Kindeva Drug Delivery for $ 650 million.
On March 8, 2024, the 3M board of directors approved the spin-off of the medical business into a separate company named Solventum. On April 1, 2024, the company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SOLV. For the previous year, Solventum’s revenue amounted to $ 8.2 billion. The largest segment was medical and surgical products, with sales of $ 4.6 billion.
The company reported an increase in sales to 2.74 billion dollars and the completion of a three-phase transformation plan. It announced its intention to accelerate growth and raise the margin to 25 percent. By 2028, it plans to achieve earnings-per-share growth of about 10 percent. The proceeds from the sale of the filtration segment will be used to reduce debt and strengthen investment stability.

It manages assets of over 35 billion dollars and produces a wide range of medical products, including wound and oral care solutions, dental materials, adhesive systems, composites, and crowns. It manufactures surgical solutions, including Bair Hugger and Prevena Restor, as well as biopharmaceutical filters, IT platforms, and Littmann stethoscopes.
2024 – today
Solventum emerged as the new name for 3 M’s healthcare business. The name and logo were introduced on November 16, 2023. On April 1, 2024, Solventum Corporation began operating as an independent publicly traded company following its spin-off from 3M. Before the separation, the division was known as 3M Health Care.
The name Solventum combines “solving” and “momentum.” The first part refers to finding answers in healthcare, while the second represents the pace of progress and adaptable development. The new name gave 3 M’s former healthcare business an independent corporate identity.
Siegel+Gale created the identity. The logo consists of a green S-shaped symbol on the left and the solventum wordmark on the right. The symbol is based on the letter “S” from the name. In the brand description, it represents limitlessness and the idea of “never stop solving.” Sam Houle of Siegel+Gale described it as an “S monogram” and an “expression of being boundless and limitless.”
The symbol is formed from a single continuous line of uniform thickness. Its upper section curves to the right, then descends gently to create an open rounded loop. The bright green color separates the emblem from the dark green Solventum wordmark.
The wordmark appears in lowercase sans-serif letters. The typeface resembles Avenir, Lato, or Inter. Solventum’s description connects the flowing S-shaped form with a responsive, imaginative, and caring approach to the needs of patients and healthcare professionals. Compared with its former status as a division within 3M, the logo gave the new company a softer and more open image.
