The Syrian American Council (SAC) was founded on November 20, 2005, in Burr Ridge, Illinois, during an organizing meeting attended by representatives of Syrian American communities from Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and California. The organization became the first political group representing Syrian Americans, registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to support civic engagement and promote a democratic and pluralistic Syria.
During its first years, SAC focused on community education, diaspora connections, and public awareness. Many founders came from the older Syrian opposition, including people who left Syria in the late 1970s and 1980s. At that stage, the organization supported civil rights initiatives, educational programs, and dialogue between Syrian and American communities.
The organization changed its role after protests began in Syria in March 2011. SAC opened an office in Washington, D.C., increased political activity, and met with U.S. officials, including President Barack Obama, Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, and members of Congress. The council published “Syria: A Clear Path,” a policy document outlining possible approaches to the Syrian crisis.
SAC later participated in legislative efforts related to Syria policy, including support for the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act and measures limiting normalization with Bashar al-Assad’s government. In 2025, after Assad’s regime fell in December 2024, SAC opened an office in Damascus, beginning a new stage focused on supporting Syria’s democratic transition.

2005 – 2022
The SAC logo unites two countries within a single symbol. On the left side is the outline of the United States, filled with the American flag, featuring a blue field with white stars and red and white stripes. On the right side is the outline of Syria, colored in the colors of the Free Syrian Army’s flag, green, white, and black, with three red stars in the center. Visually, the symbol illustrates the unity of American and Syrian communities, reflecting the organization’s mission.
Across these maps are large white letters, “SAC,” positioned centrally within the composition. Due to their size, the letters appear massive, although the font is sans-serif and not overly bold. The letter lines are clear, straight, and neatly proportional, with a slight black shadow, making the text appear more dimensional and visible against the bright maps.
The logo is colorful, utilizing the American colors (blue, red, white) and the Free Syrian Army flag (green, white, black, and red). 2022 – today
The Syrian American Council logo features a symmetrical vertical layout. At the center of the composition stands a tall monument reminiscent of familiar statues and memorials, topped by a glowing red five-pointed star. This arrangement creates a distinct vertical axis that runs through the entire design. The monument simultaneously serves as the letter “I” in the words “SYRIAN” and “AMERICAN.”
The text is arranged on three levels: the first two words, “SYRIAN AMERICAN,” are set in a confident, clear, and strict sans-serif font. The letters are large, geometrically precise, and evenly spaced, giving the text a stable and balanced appearance. Beneath these words, in thinner lettering, is “COUNCIL.” All text is rendered in a unified shade of gray-green.
Below, the text is underscored by a horizontal red line, creating a sense of a solid foundation for the entire composition. The color scheme is restrained, soft gray-green paired with a bright red star and line.
