Wind energy involves installing turbines, connecting them to the grid, and maintaining the equipment over many years. Such projects are carried out on land and at sea, where airflow is used to generate electricity. The Vestas logo is associated with a company that designs and manufactures wind turbines and handles their installation and maintenance.
Vestas began in 1898 in the Danish town of Lem. That year, Hans Smith Hansen opened a small blacksmith’s workshop. In 1945, his son, Peder Hansen, founded the company Vestjysk Stålteknik, which later adopted the shortened name Vestas. At first, the company produced metal products. Since 1950, it has been manufacturing agricultural machinery.
In the 1970s, the company produced hydraulic cranes. After the 1973 oil crisis, management decided to pursue new directions for development. In 1979, Vestas installed its first wind turbine. In 1980, serial production began for models with a capacity of 55 kilowatts.
In 1983, a branch was opened in the United States. Over two and a half years, two thousand turbines were delivered there. In 1986, the company went through bankruptcy and restructuring. After that, Vestas Wind Systems was established. The new structure began international expansion, establishing subsidiaries in India and Germany. In the 1990s, the company grew in Europe and beyond. In 1997, it released the NTK 1500/60 turbine. This model received the IF and Red Dot awards. In 1998, the company was listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange and built new factories in Italy and Denmark.
In 2001, the company launched the first large offshore wind farm, Horns Rev, off the coast of Denmark. In 2004, it merged with NEG Micon and gained up to forty percent of the global market. In the following years, Vestas strengthened its presence in China and the United States. In 2011, an offshore turbine with a capacity of seven megawatts was introduced. Later, it was upgraded to eight megawatts.
In 2013, the company created a joint venture with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. In 2017, a 9.5-megawatt wind installation was set up off the coast of the United Kingdom. It became the most powerful in the world. By that time, the company had installed more than 60,000 turbines in 63 countries.
In 2024, Vestas completed the installation of a prototype onshore turbine with a capacity of 7.2 megawatts. The model was designated V172.
The company maintained its leadership in the industry. The main areas of activity are production, installation, and maintenance of wind generators. The total installed capacity exceeded 155 gigawatts. They are operated in sixty-seven countries. In October 2025, the company temporarily suspended construction of a plant in Poland.

What is Vestas?
A Danish company from Aarhus that manufactures equipment for wind energy and holds leading positions worldwide. It was founded as a blacksmith workshop and later focused on producing wind turbines, with its three-blade model becoming the industry standard. The main revenue comes from energy solutions sales, while the rest comes from servicing 155 GW of installed turbines.
1984 – 2004
The blue italic Vestas logo appeared in 1984, when the Danish company focused its development on wind energy. The name inside a horizontal stripe became the primary element of the identity. The format was suitable for large industrial equipment.
The wordmark used sans-serif letters slanted to the right. The uppercase “V” was wider than the remaining letters, followed by lowercase characters with similar stroke widths. The typeface resembled ITC Machine and Eurostile Extended. The blue stripe matched the height of the lowercase letters and formed a compact horizontal block. This format was suitable for wind turbine towers and nacelles standing more than 100 meters tall. The blue letters on white housings were easy to distinguish from the ground and in aerial images.
The name appeared in 1945 and came from Vestjysk Stålteknik A/S, which translates as “West Jutland Steel Technology Company.” The shortened form combined parts of “Vest” and “Stålteknik.” The company’s history began in 1898. Blacksmith Søren Christian Hansen opened a workshop in Lem that produced metal goods for agriculture. The product range later expanded to include steel windows, household goods, agricultural machinery, and industrial equipment.
The company entered alternative energy in the 1970s. Engineer Birger Madsen participated in the development of its first wind turbines. At the same time, the oil crisis increased interest in the new industry. In the early 1980s, a blade failure on one installation led to the shutdown of sold units, compensation payments to customers, and a redesign of the structure. After the accident, production of fiberglass components was transferred to the group’s own facilities to maintain quality control throughout every stage.
The financial crisis of 1987 resulted in the sale of divisions operating in other industries. Wind turbine manufacturing became the company’s main business, and the organization adopted the name Vestas Wind Systems A/S. The blue logo continued to appear on equipment, facilities, reports, and corporate materials.
2004 – today
The updated Vestas logo appeared after the merger with NEG Micon. The redesign changed the lettering while retaining the overall format. The identity continued to rely on the wordmark.
The name appears in dark blue sans-serif letters. An uppercase “V” begins the word, followed by lowercase characters. A rightward slant distinguishes the new version from the previous one. The typeface was developed specifically for the company and resembles Eurostile and Neo Sans. Following the merger, the wordmark became the foundation of the corporate identity.
