In 2014, South Korea’s Aram Air and Singapore’s HNA Group partnered to create Air Seoul, a new budget airline. They aimed to make air travel from Seoul more affordable. Air Seoul was officially established on April 7, 2015, with approximately 60 billion won ($54 million) in capital, with Aram Air holding 51% and HNA Group 49%. They allocated 400 billion won ($358 million) for initial costs, including aircraft, staffing, licenses, and operations for the first five years.
The airline began operations on July 11, 2016, with its first route from Seoul to Busan, operating four leased Airbus A320 aircraft. Initially focusing on domestic destinations, it quickly expanded to include Jeju, Muan, and other South Korean cities. By the end of 2016, it added four Boeing 737-800 aircraft to its fleet.
Air Seoul launched international flights from Gimpo Airport to Japan, China, Vietnam, and Thailand in 2017. By the end of 2018, the fleet expanded to 16 aircraft, serving 33 destinations across Asia, including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
Despite intense competition in 2020 and 2021, Air Seoul expanded its route network. By 2023, the airline was operating over 60 domestic and international routes from multiple airports in South Korea, including Seoul, Busan, Jeju, and Muan. Their fleet comprised 24 Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Air Seoul is headquartered in the Gangseo-gu area of Seoul, at 176 Haneul-gil, under the leadership of CEO Cho Jin-man. In a strategic development in April 2022, Kazakhstan’s Air Astana acquired a 51% stake in Air Seoul from Aram Air, planning to use the airline as a regional hub for Southeast Asian routes.
