Aircalin: Brand overview

Aircalin, also known as Air Calédonie International, was born in 1983 and has become an integral part of New Caledonia’s transportation system. Aircalin’s remarkable journey began on November 4, 1983, when it operated its first flight from Tontouta International Airport to the picturesque island of Île-de-Pin, just off the coast of the mainland. This was made possible by a strategic partnership agreement signed between the Government of New Caledonia and Air Austral on August 25, 1983.

Beginning its aviation history with a single Boeing 737-300 aircraft in 1996, Aircalin initially spread its wings towards Australia. The company soon expanded beyond Australian shores and began flying to various Pacific countries such as Vanuatu, Fiji, Wallis and Futuna, Tahiti, Vanuatu, Japan, and New Zealand.

In 2014, the company announced that it had signed an agreement to purchase two A320neo aircraft, with delivery scheduled for 2017 and 2018.

Aircalin Logo

Aircalin’s logo features the flower of New Caledonia’s most common plant, the hibiscus. The bright red corolla with a yellow center is unique in that it is depicted in an abstract rather than realistic style, with sharp angles at the pistil and smooth curves on the petals. To the right of it is the name of the airline. The inscription is executed in a smooth italic font without serifs. Bold letters are easy to read, and the distance between them is quite large. Behind the thin azure line is another inscription – “Nouvelle-Caledinie.”

The choice of hibiscus and its abstract embodiment tie the logo to the local culture while giving it a modern feel. The smooth italic font of the company name complements the organic shapes of the hibiscus, while the bold letters speak of strength and reliability. The azure line adds an element of grace, while the additional lettering “Nouvelle-Caledinie” geographically ties the airline to its region of operation.
