Airtable was born in San Francisco in 2012 through the combined efforts of Howie Liu, Andrew Ofstad, and Emmett Nicholas. The trio worked in secrecy on the platform for the first two years, and it wasn’t until 2014 that a closed beta was released. Their hard work paid off when the company made its public debut in 2015, receiving a significant $3 million investment from funds such as CrunchFund and Freestyle Capital.

The growth momentum didn’t stop there. In 2015 and 2016, the company attracted additional financial support, raising approximately $60 million. Notable backers included CRV and a venture capital fund linked to celebrity Ashton Kutcher. 2015 was the year Airtable improved its platform by introducing APIs, forms, and important integrations with tools like Slack.

With its ability to meet the needs of different industries by allowing teams to build custom relational databases and operational processes, Airtable became a favorite. By 2019, the company’s revenue had passed the $100 million mark and doubled to $200 million by 2021, reflecting the rapid expansion of its user community. This impressive growth trajectory enabled the company to earn the coveted “unicorn” title in 2018 after completing its Series C funding round, bringing its valuation to over $1 billion.

While retaining their hallmark of spreadsheet adaptability, they began offering out-of-the-box templates and additional features geared toward large enterprises. 2022 was another landmark year: the company raised $735 million in funding, bringing its valuation to an impressive $11 billion. The financial backing was used to expand its product suite, including the integration of artificial intelligence.
