American Financial Group traces its history to 1872. That year, the German American Insurance Company was founded in New York. The first insurance policy was issued on March 19, 1872. In 1918, the organization changed its name to Great American Insurance Company. In the following decades, it strengthened its capital and successfully overcame the economic crises of the twentieth century. Since 1968, the company has been part of the conglomerate National General Corporation. In 1973, control was acquired by Cincinnati entrepreneur Carl Lindner. In 1974, he merged NGC with American Financial Corporation. This became the foundation of the future American Financial Group.
