Counter-Strike began in 1999, when students Minh Le and Jess Cliffe released a Half-Life mod centered on two teams: terrorists and counter-terrorists. The mod quickly became a major PC gaming phenomenon. Valve bought the rights and published it as a standalone game in November 2000. In October 2004, Counter-Strike: Source moved the series to the Source engine.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive began as a task for Hidden Path Entertainment: port Counter-Strike: Source to Xbox 360. The project later grew into a new game, partly because Counter-Strike had become one of the company’s least-updated series. Valve announced “CS:GO” on August 12, 2011, and began closed beta testing on November 30, 2011.
“Valve released CS:GO” on August 21, 2012, for Windows, macOS, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, with Linux following in September 2014. After launch, Hidden Path stepped back, and the team continued updates internally. The start was modest: in its first month, peak concurrent players stayed below 52,000. The turning point came in August 2013 with the Arms Deal update, which added weapon skins, cases, trading, M4A1-S, USP-S, and early eSports cases.
The skin economy changed the game’s community and added a new commercial layer to “CS:GO”. In 2013, the first sponsored Major tournament helped define it as an esports title, competing for attention with Activision’s Call of Duty. On December 6, 2018, Valve made “CS:GO” free-to-play and added Danger Zone. In April 2020, it reached 1,305,714 concurrent players. Valve announced Counter-Strike 2 on March 22, 2023, released it on September 27, 2023, and replaced “CS:GO” on Steam; support for “CS:GO” ended on January 1, 2024.
Meaning and History
The “CSGO” logo remains stable and comes in two forms: the full name and the abbreviated name. In the first case, the inscription is two-level and right-aligned; in the second, it is horizontal and split into two segments. However, the soldier’s silhouette remains the same: a machine gun raised to eye level as the fighter carefully aims at the target. There is only one emblem, which is a continuation of its predecessor, the Counter-Strike: Source badge.
The figure of a man is presented as a shadow, with the exact outlines of the pose, ammunition, and weapons discernible. The soldier has numerous military items on his belt, typically used in battle. Judging by his leg position (one forward, the other shifted back and to the side), the man appears to be aiming or firing. A soldier is wearing a helmet on his head, and he holds a machine gun in his hands. Experts even identified its brand. Based on the curved magazine, this is a 5.56mm SCAR-L assault rifle. The SCAR-17 is based on the SCAR-H, which has a slightly larger caliber: 7.62 mm. Even though the SCAR-L is no longer in the game, this weapon type is still preserved in the logo.
What is CSGO?
“CS:GO” is a multiplayer shooter. It is the fourth in a series with the same name, set in a military theme. Valve developed it, with help from Hidden Path Entertainment. The game’s full name is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. It was first released in 2012.
The figure has abbreviations on the sides: “CS” on the left and “GO” on the right. The letters are bold, large, capitalized, and square. They all look like different “O” segments. This impression is created due to the rounded corners on the outside. But on the inside, the corners remain straight and even: each is 90 degrees.
The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive logo is unchanged and directly continues its predecessor, used in Counter-Strike: Source. This reflects the game’s unchanging theme.
Font and Colors
The typeface resembles TVGlobeHD Regular. It is just as bold, blocky, and square, with cut-off letter ends. Although the palette is monochrome, it exists in two versions: a black silhouette on a white background and a white one on a black background.
