The Hushmail logo service guarantees stability and permanence. As you can see in the emblem elements, by having only your key, you can open the secret message and decipher its meaning. Confidentiality of mail is the client’s priority.
Hushmail: Brand overview
Hushmail began in 1998, when Cliff Baltzley, formerly linked to Ultimate Privacy, founded Hush Communications in Canada. The company established its headquarters in Anguilla, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, because US law at the time restricted the export of encryption technologies with keys longer than 128 bits. Hushmail was being built around 1024-bit encryption.
The service launched in May 1999 and used OpenPGP to encrypt email on the sender’s device before it reached the company’s servers. Encryption and decryption were handled via a Java applet in the browser. Accounts were free, similar to Hotmail, and required both a password and a longer passphrase for access. In the secure email niche, Hushmail was compared with ZipLip, a U.S.-based service that uses 128-bit encryption.
In 2001, Ben Cutler became CEO, and in 2002 Brian Smith, who had designed much of the technical architecture, became CTO. Operations moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. In 2006, Hushmail added a simpler, non-Java web interface that handled encryption on the company’s servers via an SSL connection.
In November 2007, the company faced a major trust crisis. Under a British Columbia Supreme Court order linked to a US steroid trafficking investigation, Hushmail handed over 12 CDs with decrypted emails from three accounts. Afterward, it stated that data disclosure could occur only through Canadian court orders or through international legal assistance channels. Hush Messenger closed in 2011, the iOS app launched in 2016, and Hushmail shifted toward healthcare, legal, and financial users, while ProtonMail, launched in 2013, became a stricter technical rival.
Meaning and History
Even though Hushmail has been on the market for over 20 years, the platform’s logo has remained unchanged. It was introduced a few days after the official launch of the secure email service.
The Hushmail brand logo consists of two elements: a verbal name and an emblem positioned slightly to the right. The name is conditionally divided into two blocks, even though this is a single word. For the “Hush” part, a classic bold sans-serif was used. All symbols of this block are made in dark blue. The “mail” part was written in italics in lowercase. At the same time, the font used was identical to that used in the first part. The changes also affected the color. There was a gray color here. Some variations of the featured logo also use a small horizontal orange underline directly below the “Hushmail” name.
What is Hushmail?
First of all, this is an opportunity to avoid worrying about whether third parties will read the letter. The presented platform guarantees client security, which is the most important factor for many users when choosing an email service.
A black keyhole inside a frame represents the secure email logo. It, in turn, is made in the form of an orange oval diagonally oriented towards the castle.
In general, it is not surprising that no decisions were made to redesign the logo for so long. Even today, it remains relevant and modern. It conveys a message to potential Hushmail customers because, in addition to the name, the emblem conveys the security most people associate with a lock.
Font and Colors
The service’s name, “Hushmail,” is set in a classic bold font, as close as possible to Times New Roman. As a basis, an interesting decision was made to separate “Hush” and “mail.” It is not only about different colors but also about the style of writing.
The color palette of the secure email platform immediately evokes a sense of calm and confidence in users. All colors, namely blue, gray, black, and orange, allow potential customers to navigate the message that the Hushmail management conveys. Thus, with the help of the logo, the essence of the service’s functioning and its task within the framework of user interaction are clearly and concisely reflected.
