LATAM: Brand overview

In 1929, the history of LATAM began with the establishment of Línea Aérea Nacional de Chile (LAN Chile) by Chilean military aviator Arturo Merino Benítez. Initially a state-owned airline, LAN Chile operated mail flights between Santiago and Arica when aviation in South America was just starting to develop.

In 1946, Transportes Aéreos Nacionais was founded in Brazil. Later, it became part of TAM Airlines and focused on regional transportation within Brazil. 1961, the company launched international flights to Lima, Peru, expanding its reach beyond Chile.

During the 1970s, it continued to grow its international network by opening routes to the United States and Europe while updating its fleet with jet aircraft. Meanwhile, TAM (Táxi Aéreo Marília) was established in Brazil in 1983 under Rolim Amaro’s leadership, starting with regional flights in São Paulo. The company was privatized in 1985, attracting private investment and accelerating its development.

In the 1990s, it expanded its operations in other South American countries, establishing subsidiaries in Peru, Ecuador, and Argentina, laying the groundwork for its future regional network. TAM began international flights in 1996, starting with a route from São Paulo to Miami.

In 2000, it rebranded as LAN Airlines to reflect its growing international focus. Joining the Oneworld alliance in 2004 expanded its cooperation opportunities with major airlines.

In 2010, it announced plans to merge with TAM Airlines to create the largest aviation group in Latin America. The merger was completed on June 22, 2012, forming LATAM Airlines Group, the largest airline in Latin America and one of the largest globally by market capitalization.

From 2013 to 2015, LATAM integrated the operations of LAN and TAM, unifying booking systems, loyalty programs, and operational procedures.

In 2015, a new unified brand was announced for all divisions. A gradual rebranding process, completed in 2016, consolidated all operations under one name.

In 2018, the company continued to expand its route network, adding new destinations in Europe and North America while investing in updating its fleet with new Boeing and Airbus aircraft. In 2019, it exited the Oneworld alliance to enter into a partnership with Delta Air Lines, aiming to strengthen its presence in the North American market.

The emergence of the LATAM logo is linked to the merger of two key Latin American aviation service providers, from which it derived its name:

  • LAN from Chile
  • TAM from Brazil

Thus, the inscription comprises two abbreviations combined into a single graphic space. This symbolizes the airlines’ unity, readiness to expand flight areas, ambition to explore new routes, and commitment to increasing passenger comfort. Each brand has maintained its individuality, infusing the identity with a spirit of support rather than competition.

At the start of their joint project, neither company had dissolved but formed a progressive alliance to open new routes and gradually become leaders in the Latin American aviation market. Each symbol retained its style.

  • The first represents the sky, lightness, reliability, and grace. The medium-thickness geometric glyphs have well-recognizable cuts that resemble a fragment of an airplane wing. This is particularly evident in the shape of the letter “A.”
  • The second symbol reflects movement, confidence, and leadership. The italicized glyphs are bold, uppercase, and very wide. Interestingly, despite the absence of serifs, they have pointed ends, giving them inner energy.

A silver star placed sideways between “LAN” and “TAM” highlights the two parts of one group, symbolizing their shared ambition to fly any distance. This dynamic is enhanced by a red wavy ribbon, harmoniously interacting with the light contour of a bluebird. The ribbon encompasses the second word and replaces the crossbar in “A.”

The star does not separate the brands but unites them, representing a common goal—leadership, value, and excellence.
