Rockstar: Brand overview

Rockstar Games traces back to London in the mid-1990s and brothers Sam and Dan Houser. Sam joined Bertelsmann Music Group in 1990 and later led BMG Interactive. Dan joined in 1995. There, they noticed DMA Design’s Race’n’Chase, signed the Scottish studio, renamed the game Grand Theft Auto, and released it in 1997.

In March 1998, Take-Two Interactive acquired BMG Interactive’s assets. The Housers, Jamie King, Gary Foreman, and Terry Donovan moved to New York. In December 1998, they founded Rockstar Games as a Take-Two publishing label. The company was officially announced on January 22, 1999.

Early releases included Smuggler’s Run and Midnight Club Street Racing. Still, the breakthrough came in October 2001 with Grand Theft Auto III. Its 3D open world, cinematic scenes, and urban crime setting gave Rockstar a clear place beside market leaders such as Electronic Arts and Activision. DMA Design became Rockstar North in 2002, followed by Vice City in 2002 and San Andreas in 2004.

Grand Theft Auto IV arrived in 2008, Red Dead Redemption in 2010, and Max Payne 3 in 2012. On September 17, 2013, Grand Theft Auto V launched with a reported budget of about $265 million and passed $1 billion in sales within three days. GTA Online then became a long-running revenue platform. Red Dead Redemption 2 followed in 2018. Dan Houser left in 2020, and in December 2023, Rockstar released the first Grand Theft Auto VI trailer, passing 90 million views in 24 hours.

Meaning and History

Rockstar Logo History

Rockstar came into being in 1998 when Take-Two decided to use the assets it bought from BMG Entertainment. BMG Interactive was liquidated shortly before, but its executives moved to Take-Two, leading the new project. They continued to develop the famous GTA franchise and, in parallel, created other video games for consoles and computers.

And Rockstar is not just one studio. It owns an international publishing headquarters and nine subsidiaries in Canada, the United States, Scotland, England, and India. They are united by logos that share a similar structure, differing only in color schemes. The brand’s name is encoded in the visual symbol: it is suggested by a large black letter “R” merging with a five-pointed star. This design has been in use since 1998 and has not changed since.

1994 – 1998

In 1994, BMG Entertainment established its multimedia division to promote video games for computers, the SEGA Saturn, and the PlayStation. His trademark bore the words “BMG INTERACTIVE” split into two lines. The abbreviation was at the top, under the inverted red triangle, which coincided at right angles with the indentation in the middle “M.” A high-contrast serif font was used for all three letters.

The second line, separated by a red horizontal line, read “INTERACTIVE.” For this part of the name, the designers chose a bold grotesque, and they had to reduce the letter size so the letters did not extend beyond the top line.

Rockstar Games Logo

Rockstar Games was founded in 1998. It became the direct heir to the BMG Interactive brand, which Take-Two acquired. The new video game publisher’s logo contains an orange square with rounded edges. Inside is a large black “R” written in elegant italics and connected by the right leg with a white five-pointed star. Both the square and the star have thin black outlines.

Font and Colors

Rockstar Games Emblem

Rockstar uses a simple visual identifier, consisting of geometric shapes and a large “R.” It applies to all company divisions. The same graphic sign is found in games, where its animated version with a soundtrack is presented. The five-pointed star represents high status, knowledge, light, and perfection.

The only letter in the logo refers to the Neue Helvetica Pro 86 Heavy Italic font. In addition, she has similarities with Ashu and Helvetica Bold, but the overlap is inconsequential. The capital “R” has no serifs, but it looks dynamic due to the tilt to the right and gently curved stem.

Rockstar Games Symbol

The main emblem of Rockstar Games is dominated by orange, which is used for the square. A white star stands out in the middle as a pale spot. The letter and outlines are black to create the necessary contrast.
