The California Legislature founded San Francisco State University on March 22, 1899, as San Francisco State Normal School. The institution was created to address the growing need for qualified teachers in the city. Canadian educator Frederick Lister Burk served as its first director and adopted the motto “Experientia docet,” meaning “Experience teaches.” The first graduating class in 1901 included around 30 women, while men were admitted from 1904.
In 1906, the San Francisco earthquake and fire destroyed the school building and its records. Classes resumed later that year in Hayes Valley, making the institution one of the first public educational facilities in the city to reopen after the disaster. In 1921, it became San Francisco State Teachers College, and in 1935 changed its name to San Francisco State College as it expanded into a four-year institution.
After World War II, student enrollment grew rapidly due to the GI Bill, and the college moved from its old downtown campus to the Lake Merced area in 1954. The university later became known for the 1968–1969 student strike, a 133-day protest led by the Third World Liberation Front. The movement resulted in the creation of the College of Ethnic Studies in 1969, the first program of its kind in the United States.
In 1972, San Francisco State College gained university status. It adopted its current name, San Francisco State University, becoming part of the California State University system. The university celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2024.

On the left side of the logo is the university seal, a round design featuring a yellow background with a purple border. At the center is a woman depicted with precise lines and neat curves, her face in profile. Behind her is a stylized silhouette of the Golden Gate Bridge, emphasizing the university’s location in San Francisco, and a flame symbolizing knowledge and enlightenment. Around the circle’s edge is the institution’s name and its founding year, 1899.
Next to the seal is the full university name, arranged in two lines separated by a neat white stripe. The text is large and evenly spaced, and it is written confidently.
