Sons of Anarchy began in Kurt Sutter’s work on The Shield, another FX crime drama. Sutter joined The Shield in 2001 as a staff writer and rose to executive producer across seven seasons. During that period, he developed a new project centered on an outlaw motorcycle club in Northern California, using Hamlet as a loose dramatic framework.
To ground the story, Sutter met real bikers and studied club culture from the inside. One key consultant was David Labrava, an Oakland Hells Angels member who later played Happy Lowman. The series used details of speech, hierarchy, loyalty, and club rules to shape SAMCRO, the Redwood Original Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, based in the fictional town of Charming.
FX aired the pilot on September 3, 2008. Charlie Hunnam played Jax Teller, the club’s vice president; Ron Perlman played Clay Morrow, its president; and Katey Sagal played Gemma Teller-Morrow, Jax’s mother. The first two seasons built a loyal audience. In contrast, season three pushed the weekly average to 4.9 million viewers, making the show FX’s highest-rated series ahead of The Shield, Nip/Tuck, and Rescue Me.
On February 3, 2012, FX renewed the show for seasons five and six and signed Sutter to a long-term deal. The final season began on September 9, 2014, and ended on December 9 with “Papa’s Goods.” Across seven years, Sons of Anarchy produced 92 episodes. FX later developed Mayans MC with Sutter and Elgin James; it premiered on September 4, 2018, continued after Sutter’s removal, and ended on July 19, 2023.
Meaning and History
A detailed study of biker subculture allowed Kurt Sutter to include details in the series that many viewers missed. For example, numerous symbols can be seen in all seven Sons of Anarchy seasons – not just in tattoos. These include patches that denote motorcycle club members’ status. It is a unique identification system, with separate patches for route coordinators, bodyguards, accountants, the acting president, and even those planning to join SAMCRO. Visual signs indicate each person’s role in the internal hierarchy.
One of the most important symbols is the so-called Grim Reaper, featured on the Sons of Anarchy logo. It appears in the series’ opening credits and in the final frames, when Jackson “Jax” Teller’s tattooed back is shown. This moment strongly reflects biker subculture because, according to the plot, all SAMCRO members must wear jackets with the Reaper image on the back and carry the same tattoo on their bodies. If a member is expelled, they must remove the drawing from their skin, either by burning or cutting it off. This happened with Kyle, who was expelled for betrayal.

Sons of Anarchy is an American crime TV series that follows a motorcycle club, their personal and family lives, and their relationships with gangs. Kurt Sutter, the screenwriter, director, and producer, created it. He also made a cameo, appearing as one of the SAMCRO members. The brand’s signature emblem for Sons of Anarchy and all SAMCRO bikers is the Grim Reaper. The mystical character is depicted in its usual form: a skeleton in a black hooded cloak draped over its skull. The Reaper also carries a scythe, but on the logo, its blade is attached to an M-16 rifle because the club’s main source of income is storing and assembling weapons. The slightly open mouth, with two even rows of teeth, looks like a creepy smile, and the gaping holes where the eyes and nose should be are filled with deep blackness.
In the outstretched hand is a crystal ball, similar to those used by fortune tellers. In the Middle Ages, people believed this object had magical properties and let you peer into the future. On the Sons of Anarchy emblem, the letter “A” sits inside the crystal, symbolizing anarchy, the concept the club’s name is based on. This clearly hints that SAMCRO doesn’t follow the American Motorcyclist Association’s rules and operates outside the law as it builds its criminal business.
Above is the series name, curved into an arch. It is written in large black letters, stylized to resemble fonts from old city signs. The scythe blade depicted just below has a similar arc shape, visually connecting the two parts of the logo: the drawing and the text. At the same time, the mystical entity’s cloak billows, creating the impression of burning flames. Considering the Grim Reaper’s line of work, something drips from the blade- blood.
In the Sons of Anarchy storyline, all club members must have a Reaper tattoo and a matching patch on their leather jackets. In the biker environment, patches with images of death and skulls often scare enemies. For SAMCRO, it is a symbol members use to recognize one another, while other biker groups use entirely different signs. Potential SAMCRO members may not wear the Reaper until they prove their loyalty, a key emblem of the series.
Font and Colors
The inscription “SONS OF ANARCHY” complements the logo, using a gothic retro-style font. The vintage design, with triangular spikes at the center of each glyph, evokes vintage signage. Large capital letters are arranged in an arch, giving the text a gliding feel. However, the “A” symbol on the magic ball has sharp, abrupt lines.
The logo’s color scheme also looks brutal. It uses only white, black, and shades of gray, possibly to make it easier for motorcycle club members to tattoo.
