Meaning and History

Star Wars Rebel Symbol

Events unfold 14 years after the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic were defeated – at the time of the heyday of the Galactic Empire. The plot is presented as in Revenge of the Sith. According to the scenario, a group of rebels, consisting of representatives of different races and classes, unites and starts covert operations. They are directed against the Imperial forces on the planet Lothal and other worlds that are under threat of enslavement by the Empire. The conspiracy takes place on the lightship Ghost.

The authors also launched auxiliary projects for the audience to understand the main characters and the course of events. Among them are comics, films, novels, video games. These media products use the characters, locations, details, and storylines involved in the main animated series. The first season was released in the fall of 2014, the second – in the summer of 2015. The third part appeared in the fall of 2016, the fourth – in 2017, the fifth – in the spring of 2018. Each of them had an original identity that united all the series into one whole.

The text intro is designed in the style of the prototype film with the addition of “Rebels.” The title is divided into three lines, one above the other. At the top is the phrase “Star Wars” in all caps with curvy “S” letters, and at the bottom is “Rebels” with military stencil cut-out characters. The first part is painted black and placed on a yellow-red background; the second is orange and takes place on a black substrate. These are two rectangles taken into a single frame.

The symbolism also consisted of a graphic element – the famous phoenix bird. Her silhouette was in the shape of an inverted crescent and resembled edged weapons – for example, the Japanese shuriken and the Viking ax. Its right and left ends are pointed, the middle is rounded, and a fleur-de-lis is depicted at the top (one of the most popular armorial figures). These are the wings of a bird, its head and crest. The look was inspired by graffiti by Mandalorian artist and weapons expert Sabine Wren (from the Rebel series).

Font and Colors

Star Wars Rebel Emblem

The logo (on the splash screen) uses a strict typeface with smooth transitions between “S” and “T,” “R” and “S.” This is a modification of Helvetica Black, specially designed for the film that became the prototype of the animated series – Star Wars. The lower word “Rebels” is written in a different font – stencil, reminiscent of military-style.

The corporate palette of the logo is monotonous, which emphasizes the seriousness of the film and escalates the situation, setting it up for formidable events. Basically, black is everywhere. In the titles of the cartoon, the emblem is complemented by a bright yellow fading to orange to reflect the poignancy of the plot with the protest struggle.
