The Undertale logo represents the idea of good and evil and poses an important question: which way will the human heart lean? The emblem is based on the contrast of light and dark, where the most important organ represents the character in terms of morality – the heart.

Meaning and History

The game was released in stages. In 2015 for Windows, in 2016 for Linux, in 2017, PlayStation users could appreciate the role-playing action, and in 2018 – Nintendo. However, the logo, developed in 2015, was used for all versions and has remained constant for already eight years. Meanwhile, the game’s name was initially stylized as UnderTale, and now, when there are versions for all devices, as UNDERTALE. This is the only change in the brand identity.

What is Undertale?

A role-playing game in which the participant plays as a child named Frisk, who ends up in a dungeon where previously defeated monsters are imprisoned. Frisk goes through the maze of Mount Ebott with the help of two mentors: Flowey and Toriel and participates in battles and conflicts. The player’s main task is to explore the underground world and find a way out.

The game’s logo consists of the title, executed in a cubic style with white letters on a narrow black rectangular background.

The base conveys the idea of a confined space, the corridors of the cave the traveler goes through.

The hole in the central letter R is shaped like a red heart. In battle, the main character is represented by a heart. Its task is to dodge attacks. He can attack himself, but the game is based on peacefully resolving conflicts and showing mercy. That’s why the heart symbol was chosen.

The theme of love and peace is central to the game. It serves as the main plotline. At first, the player encounters two monsters, one of which teaches him the evil path of killing, while the other shows how to neutralize aggression (for instance, by fleeing or sparing the enemy). From that point on, whether the character exhibits kindness towards the monsters or kills them is significant. The protagonist gains a friend by sparing an enemy, and the ending becomes happy.

The game demonstrates that love can melt any ice. Thus, the heart in the emblem carries great significance, symbolizing humanity and love. It is positioned in the logo’s center, and its bright color stands out against the colder sign’s backdrop.

The cubic appearance of the letters reminds one of the world of Minecraft, while Undertale points to a battlefield rendered in a black-and-white style with flat figures. The field itself is square, and the figures within it are made up of cubic pixels.

Font and Colors

The color palette conveys the game’s ambiance, taking place in a dungeon represented by a black background. All characters are white. This color combination is typical for Undertale’s battlefields. The idea of contrast relates to spiritual matters – the opposition of good and evil, humans and monsters.

The red color pertains to the heart, represented by the player during battles. The hue communicates the ability to love, show compassion and empathize, qualities that distinguish a genuine human being.

The font of the inscription is unique because the letters are created by merging individual cubes.
