The Undertale logo represents the idea of good and evil and poses an important question: which way will the human heart lean? The emblem is based on the contrast between light and dark, with the heart, the most important organ, representing the character’s morality.

Undertale: Brand overview

Undertale began on January 2, 2013, when American student Toby Fox opened a Wikipedia article about arrays and started learning GameMaker. From those early tests came the battle system that later defined the game. Before Undertale, Fox had made EarthBound mods for Nintendo’s RPG and composed music for Andrew Hussie’s Homestuck, where he learned to build atmosphere with limited tools.

On May 23, 2013, Fox released a public demo covering about a quarter of the planned story. On June 25, he launched a Kickstarter campaign with a $5,000 goal. By July 25, it had raised $51,124 from 2,398 backers. The money gave the project a community before release. Still, the schedule expanded as locations and systems took months rather than weeks to complete.

Fox made most of the game himself, including writing, programming, and music created in FL Studio. Artist Temmie Chang became the main regular collaborator and drew many of the sprites. Undertale changed the usual JRPG fight structure by letting players attack, spare, talk to, or befriend enemies. At the same time, the game remembered their choices across the story.

Undertale launched for Windows and macOS on September 15, 2015, after almost 32 months of work. YouTube, Reddit, Tumblr, and Twitter helped spread the game within weeks. By late 2015, it topped Metacritic user rankings. It won GameFAQs’ “Best Game Ever” contest ahead of The Witcher 3 by CD Projekt Red. It later came to Linux, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita, while Sans appeared in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2019. From 2018 onward, Fox continued the universe with Deltarune.

Meaning and History

Undertale Logo History

The game was released in stages. In 2015 for Windows, in 2016 for Linux, in 2017 for PlayStation users, and in 2018 for Nintendo. However, the logo, developed in 2015, has been used across all versions and has remained unchanged for 8 years. Meanwhile, the game’s name was initially stylized as UnderTale, and now, with versions for all devices, as UNDERTALE. This is the only change in the brand identity.

What is Undertale?

A role-playing game in which the participant plays as a child named Frisk, who ends up in a dungeon where previously defeated monsters are imprisoned. Frisk goes through the maze of Mount Ebott with the help of two mentors: Flowey and Toriel and participates in battles and conflicts. The player’s main task is to explore the underground world and find a way out.

Undertale Logo

The game’s logo consists of the title, executed in a cubic style with white letters on a narrow black rectangular background.

The base conveys the idea of a confined space, the corridors of the cave that the traveler goes through.

The hole in the central letter R is shaped like a red heart. In battle, the main character is represented by a heart. Its task is to dodge attacks. He can attack himself, but the game is based on peacefully resolving conflicts and showing mercy. That’s why the heart symbol was chosen.

The theme of love and peace is central to the game. It serves as the main plotline. At first, the player encounters two monsters: one teaches him the evil path of killing, while the other shows how to neutralize aggression (for instance, by fleeing or by sparing the enemy). From that point on, whether the character exhibits kindness towards the monsters or kills them is significant. The protagonist gains a friend by sparing an enemy, and the ending becomes happy.

The game demonstrates that love can melt any ice. Thus, the heart in the emblem carries great significance, symbolizing humanity and love. It is positioned at the center of the logo, and its bright color stands out against the sign’s colder backdrop.

The cubic appearance of the letters evokes Minecraft, while Undertale depicts a black-and-white battlefield with flat figures. The field itself is square, and the figures within it are made up of cubic pixels.

Font and Colors

The color palette conveys the game’s ambiance, with a black background evoking a dungeon. All characters are white. This color combination is typical for Undertale’s battlefields. The idea of contrast relates to spiritual matters – the opposition of good and evil, humans and monsters.

The red color pertains to the heart, represented by the player during battles. The hue communicates the ability to love, show compassion, and empathize, qualities that distinguish a genuine human being.

The font of the inscription is unique because the letters are created by merging individual cubes.
