Ameren was created in 1997 from the merger of Union Electric Company and Central Illinois Public Service Company. The company’s history dates back to 1902. That year, Union Electric was established in St. Louis and supplied the city with electricity. Construction of the first coal-fired power plants began at that time. In the mid-20th century, the company expanded its network. In 1984, the Callaway nuclear power plant, with a capacity of about 1200 megawatts, was commissioned.
Central Illinois Public Service was founded in 1902. The company supplied electricity and gas to cities in Illinois. By the 1970s, it operated several large coal power plants and an extensive gas distribution network.
After the 1997 merger, Ameren became one of the Midwest’s largest utility companies. It served three million customers in Missouri and Illinois. In the 2000s, the holding acquired Illinois Power and CILCORP.
Since the mid-2000s, Ameren has focused on regulated utility operations. The gradual closure of old coal-fired power plants began. In the 2010s, the company invested in network upgrades, equipment replacement, and the introduction of smart meters.
In 2021, energy storage projects using battery systems were launched. In 2022, the last coal plant, Rush Island, was shut down. Gas and renewable sources became the foundation of power generation.

1997 – today
Following the merger of Union Electric Company and Central Illinois Public Service Company, Ameren Corporation was formed, along with a logo designed by the agency Kiku Obata & Co. The logo clearly conveys the nature of the new energy structure.
The company name “Ameren” is rendered in large, slanted, right-facing letters. The font is bold, austere, and sans-serif, similar in style to Eurostile or Neo Sans. The first letter is capitalized, while the rest are lowercase, creating a natural perception of the word. The text is black.
To the left of the word is a circular symbol composed of separate wedge-shaped lines radiating from a common central point.
