Consolidated Edison traces its history to 1823, when the New York Gas Light Company was founded. The company provided gas lighting for the streets of Manhattan. By the end of the 19th century, New York’s energy supply market was divided among numerous companies. In 1882, Thomas Edison founded the Edison Electric Illuminating Company. He built the first power plant, Pearl Street Station, which supplied electricity to eighty-five customers.

In 1901, Edison Electric merged with its competitors. The new structure was named New York Edison Company. In 1936, the company became known as Consolidated Edison. In the first half of the 20th century, coal and oil power plants were built. Later, the company launched the Indian Point nuclear power plant in 1962.

After the blackouts of 1965 and 1977, Con Edison began investing in backup capacity and modernizing its infrastructure. In the 1980s and 1990s, outdated plants were closed, and the networks were upgraded. After the market was deregulated in 1997, the company focused on energy distribution. To achieve this, the holding company Consolidated Edison Inc. was established.

Since the early 2000s, the company has been upgrading underground cables. After Hurricane Sandy in 2012, a large-scale program was launched to protect the networks from flooding. In 2015, an intelligent grid management program began. In 2017, battery storage systems began to be implemented.

Its unique steam infrastructure heats and cools buildings in Manhattan, and the company’s origins are tied to the first energy enterprises of the Thomas Edison era.

The Con Edison brand adopted its short, urban name after a long history in New York’s utility sector. The company’s earliest predecessor, “New York Gas Light Company,” began operations in 1823 and provided gas lighting for the city. In 1884, several gas companies merged into “Consolidated Gas Company.” This is where the “Consolidated” part came from, tied to the merger of different businesses.

Later, electricity took the leading role in the business. By 1936, it had become more important than gas in terms of sales volume, and the company was renamed “Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc.” The long name reflected the transition from gas lighting to the city’s electrical network. In everyday speech, it was shortened to “Con Edison” and “ConEd.” Under these names, the company became known as a provider of electricity, gas, and steam for New York City and Westchester County.

The logo was designed by “Lippincott & Margulies.” It has no separate symbol and is built around the name. The word “Con” sits on top and is aligned to the right, while “Edison” is placed below. This arrangement helps the shorter first part avoid getting lost next to the longer second part.

The inscription is set in a bold, rounded typeface, similar to “Helvetica Rounded Bold.” The first letters, “C” and “E,” are uppercase, while the rest are lowercase. The blue color softens the utility sector’s strictness and brings the mark closer to everyday urban life.

2000 – today

On October 11, 2000, “Con Edison” received a new logo. A combination of a symbol and the name replaced the previous two-line inscription. The project was created by Peter Arnell, an American designer and founder of “Arnell Group.” The brand received a shorter, denser form, suitable for signage, equipment, documents, and the urban environment.

On the left is a symbol composed of 3 nested arcs. Together, they form the Latin letter “C.” The right edges of the lines are cut vertically, and all the lines have the same thickness. Because of this, the symbol also suggests the letter “E,” another key letter from the name “Con Edison.”

The blue color carried over from the company’s previous image, uniting the symbol with the text. But the presentation itself changed. The soft two-level inscription gave way to a compact emblem, in which the 3 arcs recall energy, signaling, and the city’s engineering network.

To the right of the symbol is “conEdison.” The name is set in “Helvetica Bold.” Almost the entire word is lowercase, while the “E” inside remains uppercase. Through this spelling, the two parts of the name are separated. The new logo looks more unified and better suited to a utility company tied to urban infrastructure.
