Animate opened its first store in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district in 1983, founded by Takashi Suganuma, who recognized the growing interest in anime and manga among young Japanese audiences. The 1990s brought nationwide expansion. In 1994, the first Animate store outside Tokyo opened in Osaka, followed by locations in Nagoya and Fukuoka. By 2000, the brand introduced the “Animate Club,” a loyalty program offering exclusive merchandise, events, and early access to new releases.
In 2005, the retailer launched its flagship location, Animate Ikebukuro, the world’s largest anime and manga specialty store, spanning nine floors and featuring exhibitions and event spaces. International expansion followed in the 2010s, with the opening of stores in China, Taiwan, South Korea, and other parts of Asia. An online international shop launched in 2016, further connecting overseas fans.

1983 – today
The development of the Animate network was reflected in the logo, in which the text and symbol function as a single system. The composition is built horizontally, combining the verbal part with the symbol placed on the left. The symbol is done in blue and resembles a face with a head covering. The upper part depicts a stylized tuft of hair. In the center, there is a shape similar to a cap or a shop clerk’s hat, and below, a circle denotes an eye. The second half of the face is covered with “hair.” The blue block featuring a stylized face adds imagery and a cultural reference, linking the brand to Japanese identity and the retail sector.
The word “animate” is set in a dense sans-serif typeface with even proportions. All letters are lowercase except for the accented “I.” Instead of a standard glyph, it is rendered as a yellow vertical rectangle with a square dot on top. The proportions of the letter are simplified, the lines are straight, and the stem thickness is uniform along its length.
The palette consists of two colors. A rich blue, close to Royal Blue, is used for the text and symbol, and a bright industrial yellow is reserved for one letter.
The typography of the Animate logo is based on a sans-serif style with moderate stroke width. The contours of the letters are smooth, the corners softened, and decorative elements are absent. The typeface looks technological.
