Metal bands that play aggressive music share similar emblems. The Biohazard logo is no exception: it looks strict, restrained, and its symbolic form evokes a sense of danger. At the same time, the sign’s style indicates that the team members are creative people who love experimenting.
Biohazard formed in Brooklyn in 1987, shaped by the street culture of late-1980s New York. Evan Seinfeld, Bobby Hambel, and drummer Anthony Meo began rehearsing in basements and warehouses before guitarist and vocalist Billy Graziadei joined. Meo was later replaced by Danny Schuler, completing the lineup that defined the band through the mid-1990s.
In 1988, the band recorded its first demo and faced criticism over lyrics that some journalists read as racist or neo-Nazi. Songs such as “Master Race” fueled the controversy, though Seinfeld and Schuler were Jewish. Seinfeld and Graziadei later said the provocation was meant to attract fans of Carnivore and its frontman, Peter Steele.
Biohazard’s self-titled debut came out on June 30, 1990, through Magnetic Air Records. Recorded on a small budget, it focused on drugs, violence, and the bleak reality of Brooklyn neighborhoods. By 1994, it had sold about 40,000 copies in the United States. In 1992, the band signed with Roadrunner Records and released Urban Discipline. “Punishment” became the most-played video in MTV Headbanger’s Ball history, while the album sold over one million copies.
In 1993, Biohazard worked with Onyx on “Bionyx,” an alternate version of “Slam.” It appeared on the Judgment Night soundtrack, which sold over two million copies in the U.S. In May 1994, Warner Bros. Records released State of the World Address, produced by Ed Stasium, with Sen Dog from Cypress Hill on “How It Is.” After later lineup changes, hiatuses, and reunions, the original quartet returned. In 2025, Divided We Fall became their first full-length album together since 1994.
Meaning and History
The band’s logo has not changed since its inception, despite changes in the group’s composition and even its demise. After Biohazard’s revival in 2008, the remaining trio also used the first emblem.
The musicians’ logo appeared after signing a contract with the record company Maze. Before this, the group independently released cassettes. With a new image and logo, they went on a European tour.

The visual sign is a circle into which three pairs of horns are wedged from different sides. The number three is significant to the group because only three friends originally formed it. - In such a system, the circle is a symbol of protection from all evil. However, its sides are torn apart by the entry of three-horned elements, corresponding to the image of a goat in the Satanists’ pentagram. Such graphic figures embody the culture of protest with generally accepted norms, a demonstration of the absence of fear of death.
- The circle in esotericism also symbolizes infinity and perfection. Its violation by lower elements demonstrates the sinful nature of man. And the group’s songs about life on the streets confirm the idea of the fall.
- Another reading of the image is connected to the similarity between the elements emerging from the circle and the letter cross used to denote the crucifixion in early Christianity. In this case, three is the symbol of the trinity. Man has divine protection through the death of Christ. Therefore, you can not be afraid and go beyond the protective circle that embodies the generally accepted opinion and stereotypes. The death of Christ forgives sins and the transgressions people commit.
All elements are drawn in such a way that they give the impression of volume forged from iron. Metal is associated with a strong, heavy style of music.

In 1992, Rolling Stone magazine recognized the logo as the year’s best emblem.
Font and Colors
The emblem is black with white trim.

The font of the inscription is unusual, with truncated corners, similar to Contraption Bold, but with a Z style, as in Unione Force Regular. The letters look like faceted gems. This hints at the value of the band’s creativity and its stardom.
