Bloomscape: Brand overview

When Justin Mast established Bloomscape in Detroit, Michigan, in 2018, the company’s history officially began. Growing up in a family with five generations of horticultural experience, Justin is thoroughly aware of the demands of plants and the industry.

Justin came up with the concept for his company by seeing how people, particularly the younger generation, desired to add greenery to their homes but frequently struggled to find and care for plants. He saw that buying old-fashioned plants—from garden centers or brick-and-mortar stores—often harmed plants in transit or not flourishing in their new settings.

To solve these issues, Justin decided to start a business that would provide consumers with healthy, fully grown plants shipped in packaging specifically made to protect the plants throughout transit.

Early in the business, Justin and his small group of employees focused on developing a productive method for cultivating, packing, and shipping plants. They created creative packaging that greatly decreased the chance of damage by keeping plants upright while being transported.

The brand formally established its website and started accepting orders in the summer of 2018. At first, the company only provided ten varieties of plants, all of which were picked because they were suitable for indoor cultivation.

In its first year, the firm concentrated on streamlining procedures and broadening its product offering. The business aggressively solicited client input, using the data to enhance its offerings. By year’s end, the company offered twenty different plant varieties.

The business received its first significant investment in 2019. In a Series A fundraising round headed by venture capital firm Revolution Ventures, the company raised $7.5 million. These funds allowed the firm to increase staff size, enhance its logistical setup, and make marketing investments.

“Petite Plants,” a new product line from the brand, is a collection of little plants in 4-inch pots. The collection debuted in the summer. It was created in response to consumer demand for little plants that work well in tiny areas or as gifts.

By the end of 2019, the firm had more than 50 varieties of plants available, greatly increasing the scope of its product offering. The business also started offering tools, stands, and pots as accessories for plant maintenance.

Beginning in 2020, the company introduced “Plant Mom,” an instructional program in which the company’s professionals guide plant maintenance via social media, email newsletters, and blogs. The goal of this program was to encourage and uplift clients’ self-assurance in plant maintenance.

The firm completed a $15 million Series B investment round in the summer. These funds were used to open additional production and distribution facilities, increase delivery speed, and expand the firm.

The company expanded its product line in late 2020 when it introduced a collection of outdoor plants dubbed “Bloom Outdoors.” The business penetrated a new market by adding garden and balcony plants to this line.

The enterprise opened a new distribution hub on the US East Coast in 2021 as part of its ongoing growth. This facilitated the company’s ability to enhance overall logistics efficiency and shorten delivery times for clients in that area.

The business introduced “Bloomscape Plus,” a membership service that offers consumers exclusive access to new goods and instructional materials and frequent deliveries of fresh plants and accessories in the fall.

By the beginning of 2022, the firm offered over 100 different species of plants and a large selection of accessories and plant care supplies, greatly extending its product line. The business made technological investments, creating new instruments to improve client satisfaction and streamline the plant-growing and delivery procedures.

In the spring, the company began working with a well-known interior designer to create an exclusive range of potted plants. This campaign aimed to expand the customer base and solidify the company’s reputation as a company that values style and utility.

Bloomscape Logo

The Bloomscape logo reflects the company’s field of activity, even without obvious symbols. It consists of a single word, yet the designers managed to convey the brand’s connection to gardening. The wordmark is crafted in a sans-serif font, associated with simplicity and modernity. The compact lowercase letters inspire trust in the plant seller, making customers believe in their client-centric approach.

The letters are made of clean lines of uniform thickness, reflecting the company’s goal of making indoor plant cultivation accessible and understandable for everyone. The minimalist style and absence of decorative elements emphasize Bloomscape’s practicality, appealing to people looking for simple and effective home greening solutions.

The perfectly round shapes of “b,” “o,” “c,” “a,” and “e” align with the brand’s field of activity. These shapes are common in nature, from water droplets to leaves and flowers. The rounded letters also create a sense of softness and friendliness, giving the logo visual smoothness and making it memorable. The circle symbolizes harmony and completeness, indicating the company’s ability to create perfect green spaces.

Bloomscape Symbol

At the same time, the logo features asymmetry: the irregular “s” and “c” stand out against the standard font of the other letters. This symbolizes that perfect forms are rare in nature, as every branch and leaf has unique features. The shortened top of the “s” and the tilted “c” break the perfection of the wordmark, expressing the idea of imperfect, natural beauty that doesn’t conform to standards. The irregular lines also evoke a sense of movement associated with plants’ continuous growth and development.

The dark green color of the letters, more effective than black, conveys Bloomscape’s connection to gardening while making the logo easy to read and memorable. It reminds one of the greenery of leaves and grass, symbolizing tranquility, harmony, and balance. The dark shade adds a sense of stability and reliability, encouraging customers to trust the company and have confidence in the quality of its plants.
