Dauntless is a free-to-play role-playing video game. It is developed by the Canadian studio Phoenix Labs from Vancouver. Its publisher and distributor are Epic Games, an American company based in Cary, North Carolina. It is offered for multiple platforms, for which it was released at different times. Initially, an adaptation for Microsoft Windows appeared (in 2018). Then came the option for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (May and September 2019). In the finale, a Nintendo Switch version was created (December 2019). Moreover, the game is so successful that it was nominated for the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers Awards.
Meaning and History
Judging by the logo, we are talking about fantasy events. Tragic actions split the fictional universe into parts, causing monsters called Behemoths to burst out. They hunt people, and they, in turn, destroy them. Players take on Slayers’ role, killing opponents and collecting loot designed to upgrade old weapons and create new ones to fight against more powerful creatures. All this is reflected in the emblem.
A video game is a third-person action game where you can act alone or in a team (in groups of no more than four gamers). The duration of each hunt takes up to 20 minutes. To attack, players use the combo system and be sure to monitor their health and stamina level.
If we take a narrower framework regarding the authors, then the battle’s real creators are former Riot Games employees. These are Robin Mayne, Sean Bender, and Jesse Houston. Moreover, Dauntless was their first joint release. The video game was inspired by Monster Hunter and was designed like Tangled and other Disney animated films. This choice was required to avoid hyperrealism.
Interestingly, the Phoenix Labs studio representatives from the first release of the game monitor its perception by gamers and interact with them, not through official channels. They track their reactions on third-party resources and forums, studying information, fixing bugs, and implementing the latest techniques. This feedback helps developers to respond to comments from the target customer segment instantly.
The emblem does not cause any complaints and is well recognizable. It has existed since the game’s debut launch and has never changed, even considering the adaptation to other platforms. The same logo is used for all versions. But it does not convey a piece of the storyline but the image of the main character – the monster Behemoth.
Font and Colors of the Emblem
To mark the visual identity of the video game, the authors chose a laconic style. They settled on a variant composed of two traditional elements – a title and an icon.
The graphic part contains a stylized head of a mythical creature. Behemoth is positioned in the full face with an open mouth and sullen eyes. The gaze is hard and direct, although only empty eye sockets are visible. The skull is composed of four unconnected fragments. The lower part is the chin; the side parts are two cheekbones; the upper part is the skull (in terms of proportions, it is the largest). The elements are depicted with broken stripes and sharp geometric shapes to create a sense of danger for the enemy.
Below is the text. This is the name of a video game made in an original font that has no analogs. Each letter is worked out individually and contains a charge of internal tension. This condition is expressed through angular lines, protruding notches, sharp strokes, and spiky serifs.
The only streamlined characters are the two “S” at the end of the word “Dauntless.” Although it is in uppercase, the first and last letters are larger than all the others. Particular emphasis is placed on the central “T.” A monster’s head hangs over it, so the horizontal stroke is depicted with an angular depression corresponding to the lower part of the dragon’s chin. The letter’s leg is made in a sword or blade hilt with a sharp point at the bottom.
The logo has individual typography – each character in the word “Dauntless” has its spelling, so the typeface does not belong to any fonts. The corporate range of colors is restrained and consists of a monochrome combination of black and white.
