Eversource Energy’s history began in 1883. That year, the Hartford Electric Light Company was founded in Connecticut. The company built the first power plant on the Connecticut River and provided street lighting for Hartford. In the following decades, it expanded its network throughout the state.
In 1886, the Western Massachusetts Electric Company was established. In 1926, the Public Service Company of New Hampshire was founded. These organizations played an important role in the electrification of New England.
In 1966, Hartford Electric Light merged with Connecticut Light and Power. On this basis, the Northeast Utilities holding company was created. By the end of the twentieth century, it managed a wide range of generation assets. Its portfolio included hydroelectric and nuclear facilities. In the 1970s, the company built the Millstone nuclear power plant. It became one of the largest in the United States.

The history of Northeast Utilities is connected to Hartford Electric Light Company. The company was incorporated in 1881 and began commercial electricity service on April 7, 1883. Its steam-powered station operated on Pearl Street in Hartford. On its first day, it supplied electricity to six customers and 21 arc lamps. For this reason, 1881 marks the legal formation, while 1883 marks the beginning of operations.
Northeast Utilities was formed in 1966. It included Hartford Electric Light Company, Connecticut Light and Power Company, and Western Massachusetts Electric Company. Public Service Company of New Hampshire and Yankee Energy later joined the group. The merger with Boston-based NSTAR was completed in April 2012. Following the transaction, the holding company managed six utility brands in New England.
The name Northeast Utilities described the group’s region and field of work. Northeast referred to the northeastern United States, while Utilities referred to public utility services. The parent holding company used a shared corporate identity. Regional companies operated under their familiar names and retained separate logos.
The logo consisted of a circular blue-and-light-blue emblem on the left and the name on the right. White radial rays of different lengths appeared inside the circle. Blue sections remained between them, while a white circular field appeared in the center. Alternating long and short stripes created a layered pattern.
The name was divided into two lines. Northeast appeared above Utilities. The black inscriptions were aligned to the left. The first letter of each word was uppercase, while the remaining letters were lowercase. The serif typeface had elongated forms and varied stroke widths. The logo represented the parent company before the Eversource Energy brand appeared.
2015 – today
Northeast Utilities announced the new name Eversource Energy on January 7, 2015. The brand came into use on February 2 in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The renaming brought six New England utility companies under one name. The logo represented a unified energy group to customers, employees, partners, and investors.
Connecticut Light and Power, Yankee Gas, NSTAR Electric, NSTAR Gas, Western Massachusetts Electric, and Public Service of New Hampshire began operating under the Eversource name. The companies continued serving their assigned territories, while their public identities became unified. Eversource replaced the regional names in audience-facing materials.
Eversource forms the main part of the logo, while Energy identifies the company’s business. The name uses bold lowercase black letters in a sans-serif typeface. A colored circle replaces the letter “o.” In the extended version, ENERGY appears beneath the right side of the main line in smaller uppercase letters.
The circle within the word is divided into three horizontal stripes. The upper stripe is blue, the middle one is turquoise or light green, and the lower one is dark green. The stripes fill the circular form. Color is concentrated within the “o,” while the remaining letters stay black. The circle can be used independently in compact formats.
BrandActive participated in preparing and implementing the brand. The consulting company cataloged applications, coordinated contractors, prepared the conversion schedule, and monitored use of the new identity. The project covered six companies in three states. Six months after launch, Eversource ranked first in awareness among New England utility brands, according to BrandActive research.
The company’s stock symbol changed on February 19, 2015. The New York Stock Exchange ticker changed from NU to ES. The letters ES corresponded to the initials of Eversource Energy.
