1968 – 1993

The 5/3 fraction connected the history of 2 Cincinnati banks with the Fifth Third Bank logo. The number “5” refers to Fifth National Bank, while “3” represents Third National Bank. The institutions merged in 1908 as Fifth-Third National Bank of Cincinnati. The hyphen later disappeared, while Fifth Third continued to represent the financial organization.

The bank’s history began on June 17, 1858, with the opening of Bank of the Ohio Valley. The institution became Third National Bank in 1871. Another branch of the history began with Queen City National Bank, which became Fifth National Bank in 1888. Twenty years later, the merger created a name from the English ordinal numbers Fifth and Third.

The bank adopted the Fifth Third Bank name and the 5/3 shield logo in 1969. During the same period, the organization moved into the new Fifth Third Center on Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati and became its primary tenant. The shield resembled a tilted square. Its upper-right and lower-left corners were rounded, while the other 2 remained pointed.

A thin diagonal line divided the black field into 2 sections. A white “5” appeared on the left, with a white “3” on the right. Both numbers used a bold italic style. In the vertical version, FIFTH THIRD BANK appeared beneath the shield. It used uppercase black letters with slightly elongated proportions. The heavy italic sans-serif style resembled early industrial typefaces.

Since 1991, the bank has celebrated Fifth Third Day on May 3. In American date format, May 3 is written as 5/3, and the logo repeats the fraction. The observance includes charitable events and internal Fifth Third Bank programs.

1993 – 2007

The 5/3 shield retained its established outline and received a blue treatment in the Fifth Third Bank logo used from 1993 to 2007. Rich blue replaced the black version introduced in 1969. The heavy italic wordmark gave way to an upright typeface with thinner lines.

White numbers “5” and “3,” separated by a thin diagonal line, appeared inside the shield. The tilted square repeated the 1969 version. Its upper-right and lower-left corners remained rounded, while the other 2 retained pointed edges. The fraction recalled Fifth National Bank and Third National Bank, which merged in 1908.

Fifth Third Bank appeared beside the shield. The opening letters of all 3 words were uppercase, followed by lowercase characters. The text used a humanist sans-serif typeface similar to Optima or Gill Sans. The same blue color united the wordmark and shield.

2007 – 2023

Fifth Third Bank introduced an updated logo developed by Cincinnati agency Deskey in February 2007. A green curve crossed the shield and continued above the name. The bank called the line the “horizon” and associated it with the meeting point between the present and future.

The update covered the placement, colors, and typography. The 5/3 shield had been used since 1969 and was familiar to customers. Deskey therefore retained the fraction connected with the bank’s history and its unusual Fifth Third name.

The shield became smaller than in the 1993 version. Its slanted outline combined straight sides, rounded corners, and pointed sections. The inner field was rich blue. A diagonal line separated the white numbers “5” and “3.” A white border surrounded the blue section, followed by a green outer layer.

A green curve passed through the middle of the shield. The line thickened near the center and gradually narrowed toward the edges. Its smooth curve rose upward, creating a long horizontal line above the text. Fifth Third associated blue with reliability and trust, while green represented growth and optimism.

FIFTH THIRD BANK appeared beneath the shield. All 3 words used blue uppercase letters with expanded spacing. The typeface became lighter and received traditional proportions. The text matched the blue field inside the shield.

2023 – today

Fifth Third Bank Logo

The new corporate signature shortened the full Fifth Third Bank name to FIFTH THIRD. The shorter form became the primary brand name. The legal organization continues operating as Fifth Third Bank, National Association, while its parent company is Fifth Third Bancorp.

The long green curve from the 2007 version disappeared. In the vertical arrangement, the shield sits above the name. In the horizontal version, it appears on the left. After 2023, the shield grew larger relative to the text, making the 5/3 fraction the primary element.

The shield retained its established structure. White numbers “5” and “3,” divided by a diagonal line, appear against a blue field. A green frame surrounds the outer edge and serves as the logo’s only green component. The form continues the history of the 5/3 shield adopted in 1969 to commemorate Fifth National Bank and Third National Bank.

FIFTH THIRD became larger and adopted an upright sans-serif typeface. Tightly spaced uppercase letters form a unified typographic block. In the horizontal version, the line corresponds with the height of the shield. In the vertical arrangement, it forms the foundation beneath the compact emblem.
