Four Loko: Brand overview

Four Loko grew out of a college idea at Ohio State University, where Chris Hunter, Jaisen Freeman, and Jeff Wright saw students mixing alcohol with energy drinks in bars. After graduating in 2005, the three Kappa Sigma fraternity members founded Phusion Projects in Chicago. They turned the habit into a packaged drink.

The original formula used four ingredients behind the name: alcohol, caffeine, taurine, and guarana. Early cans were 355 ml with 6% alcohol, and sales were weak. In 2008, the founders changed the format: a 695 ml can, 12% alcohol, bright camouflage packaging, and a price of around $2.50. The new can contained alcohol comparable to several beers, which helped Four Loko spread across 46 states by 2008-2009.

The same formula brought public scrutiny. Its competitor, Sparks, made by MillerCoors, removed caffeine in 2008 after pressure from attorneys general in 25 states. Four Loko then grew in a shrinking market, but caffeine became the core issue. In 2010, hospitalizations linked to the drink were reported at Ramapo College and Central Washington University, followed by campus bans and state restrictions.

On November 17, 2010, the FDA warned Phusion Projects that added caffeine was an unsafe food additive. The company then removed caffeine, guarana, and taurine. A revised version reached stores in January 2011. That year, the FTC settlement required clearer alcohol-equivalent labeling and $400,000 in payments. In 2021, Phusion Projects launched Four Loko Records, while the drink was sold in 49 US states and over 20 countries.

Initially, wormwood was removed from the composition, and then, in 2010, guarana, taurine, and caffeine were also removed. As a result, the drink became malt-based, and the company focused on expanding its flavor variety. Four Loko retained its name despite the absence of the four essential ingredients. However, this measure did not help: in 2011, alcoholic beverages were banned from sale in some US regions. Now it is available in only 49 states and 21 countries.
