The Four Loko logo is an example of restraint against the background of extravagant tastes, as bright splashes of colors serve as the backdrop for the standard inscription. Such a sign gives vigor and is a benchmark for an extraordinary approach to the classic label, as it adorns 695-milliliter cans of alcoholic beverages.

Four Loko is a line of alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content ranging from 6% to 14%, depending on the importing country. It is produced in the USA by Phusion Projects, a company based in Chicago, Illinois. The brand’s founders are three friends: Jeff Wright, Jaisen Freeman, and Chris Hunter, who developed the original alcohol-based drink with four components in 2005.

Meaning and History

Four Loko Logo History

Being party enthusiasts, Jeff Wright, Jaisen Freeman, and Chris Hunter found an alternative to strong alcohol, replacing it with their own energy drink. They used a low-alcohol mixture containing caffeine, guarana, taurine, and wormwood. Their product was launched in 2005 and sold as a premium malt beverage. However, after five years, the manufacturer changed the recipe because the product was being banned due to the risky combination of components.

Initially, wormwood was removed from the composition, and then, in 2010, guarana, taurine, and caffeine were also removed. As a result, the drink became malt-based, and the company focused on the variety of its flavors. Four Loko retained its name, despite the absence of the four essential ingredients. However, this measure did not help: in 2011, the alcoholic beverage was banned from sale in some US regions. Now it is available only in 49 states and 21 countries.

What is Four Loko?

Four Loko is an alcoholic beverage invented by three friends while they were students at Ohio State University and frequently attended parties. After graduating, they created their own brand, focusing on producing an energy drink that later became malt-based due to replacing some ingredients. The manufacturer is Phusion Projects, located in Chicago, Illinois (USA). The energy drink officially entered the market in 2005.

Four Loko Logo

The Four Loko logo is text-based. The first word is large and wide because it serves as a background for the second – which is smaller and less noticeable. They contrast in several ways:

  • Style (block and italic);
  • Color (white with black trim and black with white trim);
  • Placement (central and bottom).

The word “Four” is composed of smooth characters with smooth lines and curves, while “Loko” consists of letters with jagged edges and zigzag strokes.

Font and Colors

Four Loko Emblem

The base font chosen for the Four Loko emblem is Ruach. This is the font used for the inscription at the bottom right. The part designed with a block typeface features smooth letters with rounded corners without serifs, making the text appear soft.

The brand’s color palette is monochrome, with a mirror effect, as the first word is painted in white with a black edge, and the second, on the contrary, is black with white trim. The logo’s background can vary and depends on the malt beverage flavor. It is usually very bright.
