Being party enthusiasts, Jeff Wright, Jaisen Freeman, and Chris Hunter found an alternative to strong alcohol, replacing it with their energy drink. They used a low-alcohol mixture containing caffeine, guarana, taurine, and wormwood. Their product was launched in 2005 and sold as a premium malt beverage. However, after five years, the manufacturer changed the recipe because the product was being banned due to the risky combination of components.
Initially, wormwood was removed from the composition, and then, in 2010, guarana, taurine, and caffeine were also removed. As a result, the drink became malt-based, and the company focused on the variety of its flavors. Four Loko retained its name despite the absence of the four essential ingredients. However, this measure did not help: in 2011, alcoholic beverages were banned from sale in some US regions. Now, it is available only in 49 states and 21 countries.
