Heidelberger Zement emerged from the cement production that Johann Philipp Schifferdecker launched in Heidelberg in 1873. The beginning was small, with 35 employees and Portland cement, which was still a new material for the construction market at the time.

The “HEIDELBERGER ZEMENT” logo relied on heraldic tradition. In the upper-right part was a lion inside an octagonal frame. It stands on its hind legs, with a crown on its head, extended front paws, a mane, claws, and a split tail. The figure is simplified, but the connection to German heraldry is clear.

The entire version is executed in light green. One shade unites the lion and the text, so the emblem does not break apart into separate pieces. For a cement company, green softened the heavy construction theme, helping the brand stand out from a rough industrial presentation.

The name is placed on 2 lines. “HEIDELBERGER” is on top, with “ZEMENT” below it, shifted to the right. “HeidelbergCement” became the new name after “Heidelberger Zement.” The name kept “Heidelberg,” the city where the company’s history began. The German word “Zement” was replaced with the English word “Cement.” As a result, the brand became easier to understand for markets outside Germany.

The logo is based on a single word, “HEIDELBERGCEMENT,” set in green on a single line. There is no space between “HEIDELBERG” and “CEMENT,” but the parts differ in weight. “HEIDELBERG” looks denser and wider, while “CEMENT” is set lighter.

The typeface is similar to “Helvetica Bold” and other neo-grotesque fonts. The first part of the name looks heavier and more industrial. The second part remains the same, but the lines are thinner. In this way, the logo separates 2 meanings within a single word. “Heidelberg” refers to the company’s origin, while “Cement” denotes the main product.

There is a small detail in the first letter “H.” At the top, the left vertical stroke is separated by a square dot, as if a small fragment had been removed from the line. The technique is restrained, but it makes the inscription look less standard.

On September 20, 2022, the company announced the name change, and in 2023, it began transitioning its subsidiaries to the new brand.

The name was kept “Heidelberg.” This preserved the connection with the city where the group’s history began. The word “Cement” was replaced with “Materials” because cement no longer described the entire business. The new name better reflects a company that works with a range of construction materials and technologies. The identity was created as part of a unified corporate system in collaboration with the German agency “MetaDesign.”

The logo consists of a symbol on the left and the name on the right. The text is split into 2 lines, with “Heidelberg” at the top and “Materials” below. Both words begin with capital letters, while the remaining letters are lowercase. The typeface is close to “Geogrotesque” and neo-grotesque fonts. The lines are aligned to the left, and the dark green color gives the logo a calm, industrial tone.

The symbol is assembled from 3 forms. The outer part resembles a rectangle with soft corners, rounded at the upper-right and lower-left. Its form recalls a leaf or a layer of material. Inside is a white figure with a curved corner on the left and a bright green section on the right. The outer figure is colored in the same dark green as the name.

The new logo moves the brand away from the narrow cement theme toward materials, recycling, and construction technologies.
