Hololive Production: Brand overview

Hololive Production began as a small AR and VR startup, not as a VTuber agency. On June 13, 2016, Motoaki Tanigo, a Keio University engineering graduate and former game developer linked to Sanrio projects at Imagineer, founded Cover Corporation. The name combined Communication and Virtual. Early funding came from Tokyo VR Startups and Recruit.

In March 2017, Cover showed a real-time motion-capture system for animated avatars and two-way livestreaming. After Kizuna AI’s rise, Tanigo moved toward virtual performers, drawing on idol groups such as AKB48 and the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku. On September 7, 2017, Cover debuted Tokino Sora, its first VTuber. On December 21, 2017, the hololive mobile app launched for iOS and Android as an AR viewing system for virtual livestreams.

In 2018, Roboco debuted on YouTube, followed by the first generation of hololive Japan’s female members, including Yozora Mel, Shirakami Fubuki, Natsuiro Matsuri, Aki Rosenthal, and Akai Haato. The agency business quickly overtook the app. Hololive Gamers followed in 2018, built around gaming streams, while singing and talk streams became core content areas.

In 2019, Tokino Sora signed with Victor Entertainment; Cover launched hololive China and HOLOSTARS; and, in December, united hololive Japan, HOLOSTARS, and INoNaKa Music under the Hololive Production brand. Hololive Indonesia and hololive English expanded the model abroad, with Gawr Gura passing 1 million YouTube subscribers in October 2020. China closed at the end of 2020. Cover later competed with Anycolor’s Nijisanji and went public on March 27, 2023, under the ticker 5253.

The “VTubermania” trend itself originated in Japan in the early 2010s. However, this movement did not enjoy great popularity until 2016, when Kizuna AI was created. This organization was considered the first VTuber in history and, therefore, received great recognition from potential participants. That is why Hololive Production was born in 2016. From that moment on, the target audience was presented with two versions of the logo in pleasant and attractive colors. Visual brand recognition is high among young, promising bloggers seeking to draw attention to themselves.

2017 – today

The parent company of Hololive Production, Cover Corp., was founded in 2016. Less than a year later, the agency was officially launched. In total, the 50 members of the association have more than 4.5 million subscribers on the YouTube platform and approximately 4 million on Bilibili.

The agency logo at this stage consists of a word inscription and an emblem on the left. The brand name is in blue and looks friendly. A classic sans-serif typeface was used, with thin lines and plenty of space between letters. Generally, the writing style is traditional, except for the letter “V,” which has a slightly modified bottom line. If we talk about the emblem, it consists of four triangles superimposed on each other: dark blue, light blue, white, and light blue. This sign should be associated with a video playback button.

2019 – today

In parallel with the original logo, another version was used. In it, all elements were identical to the first logo, except for the additional inscription “production.” It is made in nondescript gray color using lowercase letters. It was also a classic sans-serif typeface, with letters slanted slightly to the right.

Interestingly, at this stage, the agency decided to work for the Western market. In 2021, the “Hololive Alternative” project was launched, the main task of which was to create a new world in which the band members had to promote various kinds of memes, thereby popularizing the group.

Overall, the logo looks soft, progressive, and friendly. Therefore, it is unlikely that a potential viewer of a video from Hololive Production will pass by.

It is also worth noting that, in addition to the full logo, the company uses a separate emblem consisting of triangles superimposed on top of each other. For example, it serves as an icon on the official website.
