Product testing and certification involve verifying that goods meet standards before entering the market. These procedures are applied in industry, trade, and manufacturing to ensure quality control. The Intertek logo is associated with a company that conducts inspections, testing, and certification of goods for international markets.

Intertek: Brand overview

Intertek traces its history to 1885, when Thomas Edison established the Lamp Testing Bureau in the United States to test the safety of electrical devices. In the same year, Caleb Brett founded an inspection firm in the United Kingdom to verify marine cargo. Milton Hershey established a chemical laboratory in Canada. These initiatives laid the foundation for the future international testing and certification system.

In the 1940s, the companies Milton Hershey and Chas Warnock merged to form Hershey’s. During the same period, Inchcape established Labtest Hong Kong and began expanding in Asia. By the 1980s, Inchcape consolidated all testing operations into the structure Inchcape Testing Services, which included the brands Caleb Brett, ETL, and Warnock Hersey.

In 1996, Charterhouse Development Capital acquired Inchcape Testing Services and transformed it into Intertek Testing Services. In 2002, Intertek Group plc was listed on the London Stock Exchange. By 2009, the company had entered the FTSE 100 index and had become one of the world’s leading providers of testing, inspection, and certification.

In 2011, Intertek acquired Moody International for $ 730 million. In the 2010s, Intertek invested in innovation. Melbourn Scientific and Alchemy were acquired. The company also launched the Protek, SourceClear, and Total Sustainability Assurance services.

In the 2020s, the company underwent a rebrand and implemented the AAA strategy, based on the principles of Assurance, Analytics, and Accuracy. During this period, SAI Global Assurance, Clean Energy Associates, JLA, and PlayerLync were acquired. These steps strengthened the company’s position in system certification, sustainable development, and digital solutions.

By 2024, Intertek had served more than 400,000 clients in 140 countries. The company’s structure included over 1000 laboratories and offices. Annual revenue reached 3.6 billion pounds sterling.

The company opened a Center of Excellence for the footwear industry in Bentonville and expanded projects in polymer chemistry and technology.

What is Intertek?

A British company operating in the field of inspection, testing, and certification, tracing its history back to Thomas Edison’s laboratories. The network includes more than 1,000 offices and laboratories in 100 countries, employing about 46,000 people. Intertek’s history began with several testing and inspection businesses. Caleb Brett inspected grain shipments and issued certificates before ocean transport in 1885. Milton Hersey opened a chemical laboratory in Montreal in 1888. It became one of the first private testing facilities in North America.

Thomas Edison established the Lamp Testing Bureau in 1896 to test lamps and electrical equipment. The project appeared during the consolidation of the Edison Illuminating Companies. The laboratory became Electrical Testing Laboratories in 1904. The initial letters formed ETL, an abbreviation later used in the American ETL Listed certification mark.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, the British company Inchcape acquired Caleb Brett, the Milton Hersey laboratories, ETL, and other inspection businesses. The assets were combined into the Inchcape Testing Services division. Charterhouse Development Capital acquired the division through a management buyout in 1996. Richard Nelson, who had previously managed the division, led the new group.

The name Intertek Testing Services appeared following the transaction. Intertek combines shortened parts of the English words “international” and “technology.” The first part referred to operations in different countries, while the second referred to technical testing. Testing Services described the group’s business. The public name was later shortened to Intertek, while the parent company received the legal name Intertek Group plc.

The early Intertek Testing Services logo included a blue INTERTEK wordmark, a circular figure, and a descriptive line. Arcs spreading around an inner area appeared on the left. The uppercase company name appeared on the right. Testing Services was placed below.

After going public, the company adopted a shorter version. The circular figure and Testing Services line were removed. The blue Intertek name became the foundation of the corporate identity. It covered testing, inspections, laboratory research, quality control, and certification.

The modern logo consisted of a blue block with rounded corners. The white word Intertek appeared inside. The initial “I” was uppercase, while the remaining letters were lowercase. The wordmark used a sans-serif typeface with flowing curves and uniform stroke widths. Open space around the edges separated the text from the block boundaries.

The blue block appeared on documents, laboratory materials, and business applications. The color was retained from the early identity featuring arcs and the INTERTEK wordmark. White text contrasted with the background and kept attention on the company name.

2017 – today

Intertek Logo

Intertek began introducing a new corporate identity in March 2017. The rebranding accompanied the transition to the Total Quality Assurance model. The company combined research, testing, inspection, assurance, and related services into one quality control cycle. The phrase “Total Quality. Assured.” accompanied the new positioning.

The logo consists of the lowercase word Intertek. The black letters use a sans-serif typeface with rounded forms and flowing connections. Similar contours appear in “e,” “r,” and “k,” preserving the unity of the wordmark. Lowercase treatment keeps the letters close in size, while black provides a foundation for the yellow detail.

A yellow circle appears above the first “i.” It replaces the standard dot and remains part of the letter. Its color separates it from the black wordmark and makes it the main accent of the logo.

Intertek connects the yellow dot with light, scientific discovery, and the electric lamp. The image refers to Thomas Edison’s laboratory work and the testing of electrical equipment. The circle conveys the idea of discovery through a small detail within the name.

The black-and-yellow version was created for Intertek Group plc and its global operations. It appeared across every area of Total Quality Assurance and accompanied testing, inspection, certification, and quality control services.

The group’s history includes several sources. They include Caleb Brett’s marine inspection business, Milton Hersey’s laboratory, Electrical Testing Laboratories, and companies acquired in different years. Thomas Edison is connected to the scientific and electrical engineering part of its heritage. At the same time, the modern Intertek grew from the combination of all these operations.
