Jysk: Brand overview
Jysk, a Danish retailer, built its brand by offering a variety of home products, including mattresses, furniture, and home décor items. Its story began in 1979 when Lars Larsen opened the first store in Aarhus, Denmark.
Currently, the Jysk chain has more than 3000 stores. Its activities extend to its home country, Denmark, and to other countries in Europe, Scandinavia, and Canada. The company offers a wide range of products, from mattresses, beds, and sofas to closets, pillows, blankets, and lamps.
The company prides itself on offering Scandinavian-designed furniture and home accessories that are high quality and affordable. Jysk is headquartered in Brabrand, Denmark, and employs approximately 23,000 people worldwide.
Jysk was still owned by its founder, Lars Larsen, until 2019, after which the controlling interest was sold to the Lars Larsen Group. However, the company’s mission has remained unchanged, and Jysk continues to look for expansion opportunities with plans to enter new markets in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Jysk’s business model involves both in-house production of some products and outsourcing to third-party suppliers. Recently, the company has expanded its product range to include outdoor furniture, carpets, and household tools.
In retail, Jysk competes with major players such as IKEA and Bed Bath & Beyond for dominance in international home and furniture retailing. However, with its unique combination of affordability and Scandinavian design, Jysk has carved out a niche for itself.
Meaning and History
What is Jysk?

The goose is the ancient mascot of Jysk. Its image serves as a metaphor for the down used to fill the company’s mattresses and blankets. The emblem depicts the head, neck, and upper chest of the bird. They are formed by a single white stripe, so they resemble a child’s drawing. This graphic softens and balances the brand name, which is written on the right side in a strict Futura ExtraBold font. The background is a rectangle colored in JYSK Blue (#143C8A).
The goose looks very simple but very cute. It brings to mind soft, fluffy pillows and warm blankets. The blue background is reminiscent of a cozy winter night. The brand name is in a serious font but next to the goose as if to say, “We are professionals, but also very cozy and welcoming.” The logo is like a mini story: business and bed, and it works!
