The Legend of Zelda logo is filled with strength, courage, and an ardent desire to save the world. The heroes of the game series have enough power to repeatedly defeat evil. Emblem symbols are like carved stone weapons that help in battles.
Work on the first Legend of Zelda began in 1984, alongside Super Mario Bros. Shigeru Miyamoto led the project with Takashi Tezuka. Miyamoto drew on childhood memories of exploring forests and caves near Sonobe, outside Kyoto. At the same time, Tezuka used Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings as a model for a fairy-tale adventure.
Early ideas were more technological: the Triforce pieces were imagined as electronic chips, and the story moved between past and future. The name Link came from that concept, with the hero acting as a bridge between eras. Tezuka shaped Link’s look after Disney’s 1953 Peter Pan. The name Zelda came from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, who suggested it to a PR manager.
Koji Kondo composed the music. He initially planned to use Ravel’s Boléro, but in November 1985, he learned that it was still protected under Japanese law. With no time to delay release, he wrote a new overworld theme overnight. The Legend of Zelda launched in Japan on February 21, 1986, for the Famicom Disk System, and later reached the U.S. on August 22, 1987, as an NES cartridge with battery saves.
The game sold over 6.5 million copies and became the first NES title to pass 1 million sales. Zelda II followed in January 1987 with side-view action and RPG experience points. Ocarina of Time brought the series into 3D in 1998 and introduced Z-targeting. Later entries included The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword. Breath of the Wild arrived in 2017 with open-world exploration and sold over 30 million copies. It was followed by Tears of the Kingdom in 2023.
Meaning and History
The action-adventure series debuted in 1986. It was initially so popular that it became the basis for a large-scale media franchise. The current logo for The Legend of Zelda contains the full franchise name. It is presented in red and written in high-contrast type with sharp triangular serifs. The style of the last word is slightly different because its letters are outlined with additional lines: pink stripes are drawn on the top and left, and burgundy ones are drawn on the bottom and right. These contours create a three-dimensional effect. The first “Z” is decorated with a diamond pattern with two pointed quadrangles at the edges. Compared to the word “ZELDA,” the phrase “THE LEGEND OF” seems very small. It has a 2D design and sits at the top, to the right of the huge “Z.”
The game has a system of symbols used to identify individual characters, items, and races. These include the so-called Royal Crest – the Royal Family of Hyrule mark. He is usually depicted in ceremonial clothing, weapons, and other objects associated with the ruling house. It is a multi-part emblem with two main elements.
Above is the sacred Triforce artifact. It is a large triangle with an opening shaped like a small inverted triangle. According to the plot of The Legend of Zelda, this is a golden relic left by the gods when they created the world. It serves as a source of courage, wisdom, and strength.
The bottom of the royal emblem is called the Goddess Crest. This is Hylia’s identification symbol. He looks like a stylized winged figure and represents the giant birds that Skyloft residents fly on. The artists portrayed him in a rather unusual way: the base of the wings resembles pointed horns, the front part looks like an animal’s skull, and the two paws at the bottom end are sharp claws.

Font and Colors
The Legend of Zelda series features a unique text logo designed by the in-house team using in-house glyphs. Later, fonts imitating the original lettering appeared. First came the so-called Triforce. Then, he was replaced by a similar Hylian Serif from Artsy Omni. Both typefaces feature bold lettering, high contrast between primary and secondary strokes, and triangular serifs.
The wordmark is almost all bright red, except for the outlines painted in burgundy and pink. The Royal Crest emblem can be black and white or gold, as in the game.
