The LOL Surprise logo turned out to be dimmer than the dolls themselves in this series. Their visual identity is not as flashy or mysterious as that of the dolls they represent. The only thing that is attractive about it is the color. It is a candy-pink color, close to the neon spectrum. The letters are wide, white, and speckled with tiny black dots.

LOL Surprise: Brand overview

L.O.L. Surprise comes from MGA Entertainment, a company founded in 1979 by Iranian immigrant Isaac Larian, who arrived in the United States with a borrowed $753. He first imported electronics from Asia through ABC Electronics with his brother Fred. In the 1990s, the company became Micro Games of America, then shifted toward toys. MGA launched Bratz in 2001 and bought Little Tikes from Newell Rubbermaid in 2006.

The idea for L.O.L. Surprise appeared in June 2016, when Larian was watching viral YouTube unboxing videos at night in Malibu. He saw children and adults opening toys on camera while millions watched. Larian asked his design team to create a toy for unboxing, in which the buyer would not know what was inside. Five months later, MGA released L.O.L. Surprise.

The product was built around small dolls and accessories hidden inside plastic balls. Children opened the package layer by layer, turning the reveal into part of the play. Instead of television ads, MGA sent dolls to YouTube unboxing creators. By 2017, MGA had sold 25 million L.O.L. Surprise dolls, and the line won the Toy of the Year award. Mattel’s Barbie and Hasbro’s brands had no direct answer in collectible surprise dolls.

MGA then added pink video booths in 13 US cities, Toronto, and London, letting children buy, open, and record toys. By late 2018, L.O.L. held eight of the top ten spots in America’s top-selling toys, according to NPD Group data, with global retail sales exceeding $4 billion. In February 2019, it won Toy of the Year again, as well as Doll of the Year, Playset of the Year, and License of the Year. Later lines included Tweens and O.M.G., as well as a 2025 Sanrio collaboration with Hello Kitty.

Meaning and History

LOL Surprise! Logo History

The surprise toy is a real discovery from manufacturer MGA Entertainment. To popularize it, they didn’t spend on full-fledged advertising or traditional marketing; the dolls attracted attention on their own. It was essentially self-promotion: bloggers filmed the unboxing of surprises, unwrapping layer by layer, which intrigued potential buyers. As a result, the novelty became the number-one toy almost immediately after its release: it was launched in December 2016 and, in 2017, was recognized as the Doll of the Year. It is now a franchise that includes a full-length animated film and three video games for the Nintendo Switch.

The LOL Surprise logo debuted alongside the doll line, so it is well-recognized among children. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that diagonals are present in everything: in the arrangement of the inscription, in the surrounding stripes, and in the background. So as not to deter curious children from the sought-after playsets, the company that owns them didn’t change its visual identity; it only adjusted it. Once. The manufacturer removed the long inscription “Lil Outrageous Littles” from the emblem and replaced it with “Surprise!”, enhancing the atmosphere of mystery and intrigue.

What is LOL Surprise?

LOL Surprise is a collection of unpackable dolls, whose full name is Lil Outrageous Littles. The lineup appeared in 2016, launched by MGA Entertainment for children aged three and up. The toy is a capsule with seven layers, each containing an accessory.

The first batch of unpackable toys (dolls with clothes or their pets with accessories) appeared on the market in the last month of 2016. However, the emblem didn’t last long, as the following series received a slightly adjusted identity. The earliest logo featured the full trade name “Lil Outrageous Littles” and its abbreviation, with a dot after each letter, “L.O.L.” The top line consisted of wide, white outline characters with numerous black dots inside. Bold lines went sideways from them, forming a red background for the lower inscription.

After rebranding and renaming the series of new dolls to LOL Surprise, with an exclamation mark at the end, the developers redesigned the logo. They slightly improved it. The evolution mainly involved removing the previous name and replacing it with the word “Surprise.” Such an inscription on the emblem accurately characterizes the extraordinary children’s toy, which consists of several layers, behind each of which the manufacturer has hidden a mysterious “find” related to the doll. The capsule itself is a surprise. The new inscription is in the same style as the old one: it is white, grotesque, and even. The bright red color has become a soft fuchsia.

The distinctive characteristic of the LOL Surprise logo is three large, wide white letters separated by bold dots. There are also small black dots on the letters themselves, covering the entire surface of the glyphs. Diagonal lines descend from the letters, making the inscription three-dimensional.

The typeface chosen for this emblem resembles Gotham Rounded Bold, created by Hoefler & Co, or Bold Bold, developed by Intellecta Design Studio. This applies to the lower line. The upper inscription is unique and resembles the bubbly characters of Adam Nerland’s Insaniburger Font. The logo’s color palette is bright, consisting of candy fuchsia, black, and white.
