Meaning and History
The young man began building his music career at the age of 15, regularly performing on stage in his hometown of Pittsburgh. In 2010, he signed a contract with Rostrum Records and immediately recorded a breakthrough mixtape called K.IDS. Another one, Best Day Ever, was released a year later, followed by his debut album. In 2014, the rapper began collaborating with Warner Bros. Records and subsequently released four more collections. He was posthumously nominated for a Grammy Award for the last one.
Each album cover was adorned with an original logo. These were mainly collages made up of photo fragments. They corresponded to the songs’ genre and theme, serving as a creative reinterpretation of the state conveyed in them. The performer and producer passed away at the age of 26 from an accidental overdose of psychoactive drugs.
What is Mac Miller?
Mac Miller is the stage name of American rapper and songwriter Malcolm James McCormick. He had another name, which he used in the field of producing: he was known as Larry Lovestain. The young man was from Pittsburgh, where he began performing at the age of 15. His first studio album, Blue Slide Park, was released in 2011. The artist is no longer alive: he passed away at the age of 26. His lifetime spanned from 1992 to 2018.
Mac Miller’s personal logo depicts a stylized diver, presumably in full gear. His face is hidden behind a helmet equipped with two hoses (presumably breathing tubes) that go behind his back. Excess air ducts rise upward, forming high, rabbit-like ears above the diver’s head. They are bent as if twisted into two loops, risking a cut-off of the oxygen supply. The eyes are hidden behind round, saturated blue lenses. The same shade of blue surrounds the man, as if he were submerged in a cornflower-blue space.
The mask’s collar tightly covers the neck and shoulders. At the same time, the diver resembles a voodoo doll. This impression is created by the arrangement of his body, arms, and legs. The diver’s limbs are spread to the sides, as if he were crucified or severely limited in his movements. His arms and legs have the shape of wide stripes with rounding at the ends, so neither feet nor palms are visible, and the diving suit does not completely cover them. It ends with long transverse lines. All elements are white, with blue stripes as contrast.
The musician-performer’s death meant that a white diver surrounded by a bright blue space remained on his Facebook page forever. This is a very symbolic image because Malcolm James McCormick had two pseudonyms, hiding his true essence. Thus, in the music world, he was known as Mac Miller, while in the production sphere, he was known as Larry Lovestain.
Font and Colors
The logo contains no text; the personal sign is purely graphic. But various fonts were used on the album covers, from cursive imitating handwriting to classic print with and without serifs. Judging by the Facebook emblem, the singer’s palette includes cobalt (a saturated shade of sea wave) and neutral white.
