Martian Manhunter first appeared in Detective Comics #225 in 1955. Created by writer Joseph Samachson and artist Joe Certa, J’onn J’onzz was introduced as the last survivor of Mars, accidentally transported to Earth by Dr. Erdel’s machine. Using the identity of detective John Jones, he worked with the police. He fought crime through telepathy, shapeshifting, invisibility, and superhuman strength.

Stories in the 1970s explored the loss of his family and Martian civilization. After Crisis on Infinite Earths in the 1980s, his origin and powers were revised for the new continuity. A 1988 miniseries examined isolation, identity, and belonging, while his first ongoing solo title began in 1998 and ran for 38 issues, introducing further allies, enemies, and details of his life on Earth.
During the 2000s, J’onn appeared in Final Crisis, Blackest Night, and other major events. The New 52 relaunch in 2011 reworked parts of his background while keeping his central abilities. From 2016 to 2023, DC Rebirth and later series continued developing his ties to Earth, the Justice League, and his Martian past in later arcs.
