Martian Manhunter first appeared in Detective Comics #225 in 1955. Writer Joseph Samachson and artist Joe Certa created J’onn J’onzz, the last survivor of Mars, who was accidentally transported to Earth by Dr. Erdel’s machine. Using the identity of detective John Jones, he worked with the police. He fought crime through telepathy, shapeshifting, invisibility, and superhuman strength.
From 1955 to 1964, the character appeared regularly in Detective Comics, where his fear of fire and encounters with human and alien enemies became central parts of his stories. In The Brave and the Bold #28 (1960), he joined the Justice League of America as a founding member, giving him a larger role across DC Comics and placing him alongside the publisher’s leading heroes.
1970s stories explored the loss of his family and Martian civilization. After Crisis on Infinite Earths in the 1980s, his origin and powers were revised for the new continuity. A 1988 miniseries explored isolation, identity, and belonging, while his first ongoing solo title began in 1998 and ran for 38 issues, introducing new allies and enemies and adding details about his life on Earth.
During the 2000s, J’onn appeared in Final Crisis, Blackest Night, and other major events. The 2011 New 52 relaunch reworked parts of his background while keeping his core abilities. From 2016 to 2023, DC Rebirth and later series continued developing his ties to Earth, the Justice League, and his Martian past in later arcs.
