Millicom: Brand overview

Millicom was founded in 1979 by Swedish-American entrepreneur Jan Stenbeck. He saw potential in developing mobile communications in markets with limited infrastructure. In 1984, the company launched its first network in Panama. By the early 1990s, the company had obtained licenses to operate in several Latin American countries, including Guatemala, El Salvador, and Bolivia.

In 1996, Millicom was listed on NASDAQ and moved its headquarters to Luxembourg. By the end of the decade, the company had unified its international operations under the brand Tigo.

In the 2000s, Millicom evolved from a mobile operator into a diversified telecommunications and digital services provider. The company invested in 3G and 4G networks, cable television, and the internet. In 2013, it strengthened its position by acquiring Telefonica’s assets in Bolivia, Paraguay, and Guatemala.

After 2015, Millicom fully focused on Latin America. Its remaining African operations were sold. In 2018, the company exited the Colombian market and redirected funds to infrastructure development in other countries of the region.

In 2020, amid growing demand for online services, the company expanded broadband networks. In 2021, the company launched commercial 5G in Paraguay. By 2022, the company had established its digital finance division under the Tigo Money brand. The service offered payment and microloan services to people without access to banking.

In 2024, Millicom announced large-scale investments in fiber-optic networks and services for corporate clients. The operator under the Tigo brand serves more than 50 million customers in nine Latin American countries. The company combines mobile communications, the internet, and digital services.

Millicom Logo

Millicom emerged during the early development of mobile communications. In the late 1970s, Jan Stenbeck and American entrepreneur Shelby Bryan began creating international projects in a field that was new to the market. Millicom Incorporated was founded in 1979 and was connected with the Swedish investment group Kinnevik. The business developed during the early years of the following decade, when most of the world’s population still had limited access to conventional telephone lines.

The name Millicom originally belonged to an American company and was used as a separate trademark. In 1983, the “MILLICOM” wordmark accompanied radio communication services and the storage and transmission of messages to pocket receivers. In the early identity, the word appeared against a background of repeating diagonal shapes. The logo represented the paging and radio communication business that preceded the Luxembourg-based group’s creation.

Millicom International Cellular S.A. was established on December 14, 1990. It combined Kinnevik’s and Millicom Incorporated’s mobile communications assets. Its founders included Jan Stenbeck, Shelby Bryan, Thelma Sosa, and Olvin Galdamez. The first part of the name preserved the connection with the American company. At the same time, “International Cellular” referred to its international work in cellular communications.

Millicom formed joint ventures with local partners, obtained licenses, and built networks in countries with limited telephone infrastructure. Its early projects helped develop networks that later took on the Vodafone and Orange names. The parent group’s name united local operators at the corporate level. At the same time, they used separate brands in their communications with subscribers.

The transition to the shared Tigo consumer brand began in 2004. It gradually replaced several local names in Latin America and Africa. Millicom and Tigo received separate roles. The first name represented the international group, while the second identified subscriber services. Both names were used in parallel, and the holding company retained a separate emblem.

By 2013, Millicom was using a logo featuring a star above a sphere. The company name and the words “THE DIGITAL LIFESTYLE” appeared beneath the image. This coincided with the business’s expansion beyond voice telephony. The 2013 transformation program covered four areas, combining mobile communications, cable networks and digital media, mobile financial services, and online services. The company developed internet access, television, digital payments, entertainment content, and business services.

The phrase “The Digital Lifestyle” connected the group’s offerings with subscribers’ everyday needs. In the logo, it explained the expansion of services and linked the Millicom corporate name with the Tigo consumer brand. The slogan represented a shared development program spanning several business areas.

A three-dimensional faceted star appeared above the text. Its sharp points were formed from triangular planes resembling a crystal. The upper and side points extended diagonally, while the elongated lower point was directed toward the sphere. A gap between the figures separated the sharp point from the globe’s rounded surface.

Different shades created the impression of light falling across the facets. Dark blue sections of the star appeared beside gray and light blue areas. The transitions on the sphere were softer. Its dark blue edges lightened toward a gray-blue area. At the same time, a silver highlight at the top suggested an illuminated surface. Shadows and gradients created depth. The star and sphere shared the same vertical axis, with the rounded figure forming the base of the composition. The monochrome version preserved the relative position of both parts.

The large word “MILLICOM” beneath the emblem was set in dark blue uppercase serif letters. Heavy vertical strokes were combined with thin horizontal lines. The letters stood upright and aligned along a single line. A thin horizontal rule above the name separated the text from the star and sphere. A second rule beneath the name formed a boundary before the slogan.

The words “THE DIGITAL LIFESTYLE” were set in small uppercase letters. Wider spacing extended the line to nearly the same width as “MILLICOM.” The text and rules shared the same dark blue as the emblem’s shaded areas. The serif corporate name differed from the rounded Tigo lettering, helping distinguish the holding company from the subscriber brand.

The later expansion of Tigo’s role in its markets was reflected in the combined name Millicom Tigo. The legal name Millicom International Cellular S.A. remained unchanged. The star above the sphere continued to represent the international group. At the same time, the Tigo name was used for mobile and home services, financial services, and business offerings.
