A network that delivers energy to every point makes it possible to flip a switch, turn on the stove, or start factory equipment. As long as everything works properly, people rarely think about it, even though this network sustains the rhythm of everyday life. The National Grid logo is associated with a company that transmits and distributes electricity and gas to homes and businesses.
The company’s history began in 1933 with the creation of the Central Electricity Board. The organization built England and Wales’ first national transmission network. By 1938, the system included about 140 power stations. In 1948, after World War II, the government nationalized the energy industry. Network management was transferred to the British Electricity Authority.
In 1957, the Central Electricity Generating Board was established. It focused on generating and transmitting electricity. In the 1960s, the UK began building nuclear power plants. In the 1970s, 400 kV transmission lines were introduced.
The 1989 privatization reshaped the industry. CEGB was divided, and the National Grid Company took control of the entire high-voltage network. In 1990, the company became private. Five years later, its shares were listed on the London Stock Exchange.
In the 1990s, infrastructure modernization began. International interconnectors were built, including the connection with France. In 2000, National Grid acquired Lattice Group, becoming a combined electricity and gas network operator.
Since the early 2000s, the company has expanded in the United States. Niagara Mohawk and KeySpan were acquired. In the 2010s, attention was focused on building interconnectors with the Netherlands and Belgium. The company implemented digital management technologies.
In 2021, WPD was acquired for 7.8 billion pounds. In 2023, the sale of a share of the gas business was completed. The Viking Link project, which connects the network to Denmark, was launched.
Today, National Grid operates major electricity transmission networks in the United Kingdom and the United States. The company directs investments toward automation, digitalization, and energy development.
Meaning and History
What is National Grid?
It is the largest energy infrastructure operator in the United Kingdom and one of the world’s leading electricity and gas distribution companies. The company manages high-voltage networks in England and Wales, plus regional lines in the Midlands, the southwest, and South Wales. It operates gas transmission, distribution, and storage systems, serving millions of customers. In the United States, the company supplies electricity and gas to more than 20 million people in Massachusetts, New York, and New England. It controls interstate networks and key gas pipelines in the region.
1955 – 2005
The launch of National Grid’s visual style is centered on the theme of the United Kingdom’s power system, with graphics that connect to infrastructure and the engineering environment. The first logo identifies the name and profile through a combination of text and symbol.
On the right is the “National Grid” inscription. The text is set in a bold sans-serif typeface, similar to “Helvetica Rounded Bold” and “Frutiger Bold.” The letters are dense, softly rounded, and colored dark blue.
On the left is a diamond-shaped symbol. Inside it is a geometric structure made of lines and angles. The outlines form the silhouette of a power transmission tower. The lines intersect, creating a grid similar to that in engineering diagrams. The inner figure is light green, while the outer diamond repeats the text’s dark blue tone.
2005 – 2020
In the 2000s, National Grid updated its logo, presenting its name in a more concise, understandable form. The new inscription appears as the joined wordmark “nationalgrid,” set in lowercase.
The logo is divided into two visual parts through the weight of the letters. The first half, “national,” is set in a thin typeface, while the second word, “grid,” is set in a heavier typeface. This boldness emphasizes the key word and the company’s work, which is connected to energy grids. The word “grid” contains an unusual detail. The dot above the letter “i” isn’t a regular circle but a diamond, almost like a separate symbol.
The logo’s main color is a bright blue, close to “#0072CE” in digital notation. The image felt technological and fresh. The logo’s letters resemble popular typefaces such as “Helvetica” and “Frutiger.”
The shift to the new style emphasized simplicity and lightness in the brand’s visual presentation.
2020 – today
In 2020, National Grid introduced an updated logo to unite its British and North American businesses under a common visual style. The work on the new image was entrusted to the international design firm “Pentagram,” which developed a custom typeface for National Grid together with “Klim Type Foundry.”
The new typeface was named “National Grid Sans” and has certain changes, but they are so subtle that the eye barely registers them.
The main change was the color. Instead of the familiar bright blue, the logo is executed in a rich dark blue. The new color made the image feel more serious and calm. It better reflects a company focused on power system management and industrial technologies.
