NET: Brand overview

NET was founded in Brazil on December 12, 1991, as a cable television operator. During the 1990s, it expanded its network across major cities, invested in new equipment, and became one of the first providers in the country to introduce digital television. The change improved signal quality and increased channel capacity. It supported growth in urban markets, where demand for subscription television was rising.

In March 2005, Embratel, a subsidiary of Mexico’s Telmex, bought a controlling stake for 570 million Brazilian reais. The deal gave NET access to added capital and technology. In 2006, it announced the acquisition of Vivax, then Brazil’s second-largest cable operator. The transaction closed in June 2007, expanding coverage in several regions and combining two major cable television businesses.

NET later added fixed-line telephone service and broadband internet, developing into a full telecommunications provider. By 2012, it had 5.4 million cable television subscribers. Broadband became a major part of the business, and by 2019 the company served more than 9 million internet users across Brazil.

On July 11, 2019, NET was integrated into América Móvil’s Claro as part of a wider consolidation of Latin American telecom assets. The name Claro NET appeared briefly in early 2020, though the transition continued. In 2022, after 31 years of operation, the independent NET brand was retired, and its television, internet, and telephone services continued under Claro.
